Houston Fall I.D.: Pitching Analysis
November 1, 2018
THE WOODLANDS, TX - On October 14, Prep Baseball Report Texas hosted an open event at College Park HS. Here is the pitching analysis from that event.
PITCHERS
Jared Matheson, RHP, Lake Creek HS, 2020
Matheson has a wiry, long-limbed frame at 6-foot, 150-pounds. The right-hander has a fast arm that produced the best velocity of the day at 89 mph, sitting 87-88. Curveball was 72-76, and he throws a plus changeup with arm side depth at 78-83 mph. Tended to miss high arm side, but he was able to make a couple of adjustments during the session to get the ball down in the zone. Recruiters will need to make sure they follow Matheson closely as there is already hand speed with some feel for three pitches.
Brayden Loving, RHP, Magnolia HS, 2020
Loving has a projectable, durable frame at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds. The right-hander works from an over the top slot with a directional, drop-and-drive delivery. His fastball topped out at 88 mph, sitting mostly 85-86. Maintains good arm speed on his slider with late, short break at 73-75 mph, while his changeup has heavy downer action in the middle of the plate at 77 mph.
Landon Hammond, RHP, Sweeny HS, 2022
Hammond is already 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, with a long-limbed, projectable pitcher’s frame. The right-hander has a clean arm stroke from a high-¾ slot with relative ease down the mound. His fastball topped out at 82, sitting mostly 79-81, with downward tilt as he gets inside the baseball at release. Slider has short, late, 11/5 downer break at 74-75 mph. Curveball has earlier break with gradual depth at 65-66 mph. There is a lot of upside still left in this young arm.
Dylan Kerbow, RHP/SS, The Woodlands HS, 2021
Kerbow has a loose arm swing with a quick hand out front from a ¾ to low-¾ slot with a sinking fastball at 80-82. Shows good feel for spin with both his curveball and slider (similar pitches) in the 70-72 range. Changeup had plus arm side fade at 75-77. Keeps a bend in his torso as he works down the mound and appears to be a guy that can change arm slots and give hitters fits with feel for three pitches.
Nolan Troy, OF/RHP, Oak Ridge HS, 2020
Troy has a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds. A two-way player and right-handed pitcher, Troy works from a high-¾ slot with a short takeway straight back from the glove. High leg lift at his balance point with a tall and fall delivery. His fastball sat 79-82 mph, throws a legitimate split-finger fastball with late breaking depth at 73-74 mph. His curveball had early break at 71-76 mph.
Seth Trevino, RHP, Klein Collins HS, 2020
Trevino has an athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, with plenty of room to add size and strength over the next year. The right-hander works from a ¾ slot with a drop-and-drive delivery. Pitching predominantly from the stretch with smooth tempo down the mound, his fastball was 79-81 mph, while his curveball had early break with 10/4 shape at 68-69 mph. Shows feel for a firm changeup at 76-77 mph.
Dane Swoboda, C/RHP, HS, 2020
Swoboda has a durable frame with broad shoulders and present strength at 6-foot-2, 208-pounds. A two-way player and right-handed pitcher, Swoboda works from a high-¾ slot with a drop-and-drive delivery. Throws a heavy fastball with tilt at 82-83 mph. His curveball has downer shape at 66-69, while his slider has shorter, later action at 69-71 mph.
James McGlumphy, C/OF/RHP, Round Rock HS, 2021
McGlumphy has a wiry, long-limbed frame at 6-foot, 155-pounds. On the mound, McGlumphy works from a ¾ slot with a loose, clean arm swing. Pitched predominantly from the stretch with athleticism and relative ease down the mound. His fastball sat 76-77 mph with arm side run and finish. Shows really good feel for spin with a 68 mph curveball that he stays on top of with 12/6 shape and depth. Changeup has arm side fade at 72 mph.
Austin Shever, 1B/RHP, Kingwood HS, 2021
Shever has a strong, muscular, barrel-chested frame at 5-foot-11, 200-pounds. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a long arm swing and a tall-and-fall delivery. Commanded his fastball at the bottom of the zone at 76-78 mph. Located his curveball in the zone with 11/5 shape at 62-64 mph. Turns his changeup over with arm side fade at 68-70 mph. Slider has more lateral, shorter break at 69-70.
Jose Segura III, SS/RHP, Oak Ridge HS, 2020
5-foot-9, 174-pounds. The right-hander works from an over the top slot with a medium arm swing and tall-and-fall delivery. His fastball ranged from 74-76 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape with early break at 61-64 mph. Changeup was 67-68, and his knuckle ball danced up to the plate at 60-61 mph then showed late action down in the zone.
