Houston Fall I.D.: Quick Hits

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

THE WOODLANDS, TX - While most of the state was experiencing significant amounts of rain, we were very fortunate to have great weather for the Houston Fall I.D. Open Showcase, hosted by College Park High School. The field was in great shape, and so was the talent. As usual, you could go anywhere in Houston and talented players will show up. Here is a just a brief look at what we saw on Sunday.

+ 2020 RHP Jared Matheson (Lake Creek HS) has a lean-strong frame at 6-foot, 150-pounds. The right-hander has a fast arm that produced the best velocity of the day at 87-88, topping out once at 89 mph. His curveball was 72-76, and he throws a plus changeup with arm side depth at 78-83 mph. Tended to miss high arm side, but he was able to make a couple of adjustments during the session to get the ball down in the zone. Recruiters will need to make sure they follow Matheson closely as there is already hand speed with some feel for three pitches.

+ 2021 SS Hector Garcia Jr. (Seven Lakes HS) has a confident presence about him on the field, and rightfully so. The uncommitted sophomore has polished actions at shortstop, to go with a solid built frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds. Plays easy catch, accurate arm, smooth footwork, fast exchange, arm works from different slots and he can play on the run. Simple strength at the plate with natural lift, his barrel stays in the zone a long time with some lift and a high finish.

+ The Sweeny Bulldogs made it all the way to the Texas UIL State Championship last year, and they return a loaded lineup this season. But the future is still bright in Sweeny with three of the freshman that we saw on Sunday. 2022 OF Noah Pate (Sweeny HS) has quick hands with lag through the zone as he barreled it up during BP, then showed off quality athleticism in the outfield, and ran a 7.2 60-yard dash. 2022 SS Collin Coker (Sweeny HS) already looks the part with a high-waisted, lean-muscular frame at 6-feet, 155-pounds. Coker also ran a 7.2 60-yard dash, and showed off smooth actions on the infield, and posted an exit velocity of 86 mph with easy rhythm and loose hands during BP. 2022 RHP Landon Hammond (Sweeny HS) is already 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, with a long-limbed, projectable pitcher’s frame. The right-hander has a clean arm stroke from a high-¾ slot with relative ease down the mound. His fastball topped out at 82, sitting mostly 79-81, but there is a lot more in the tank as he continues to develop.

+ 2019 OF Darrion Eddie (Tomball HS) has super projectable, lean-muscular frame at 6-foot-3, 180-pounds. The right-handed hitter uses his long levers to generate significant extension through contact with natural feel to hit as he keeps his hands back and delivers the head with authority, including two home runs at the end of batting practice. Posted an exit velocity 88 mph off the tee. In the outfield, he plays through the ball with athletic footwork and quick exchange. Accurate arm to the dish with a top velocity of 85 mph. For college recruiters looking for athleticism and upside in the outfield, I could see Eddie adding even more power as he hits the weight room. Ran a 7.12 60-yard dash.

+ 2020 IF Evan Cameron (College Park HS) is an all around baseball player that does everything well. The actions are solid on the infield with the ability to throw accurately with a clean arm swing from different slots and fundamental, directional footwork. The right-handed hitter barreled it up during BP with a rhythmic load, controlled leg kick, and loose-quick hands. Current gap power with an exit velocity of 88 mph.

+ Really like the way 2020 SS Micah Walker (South Houston HS) moves at shortstop. He has smooth-flashy actions with quick footwork, fast hands, and quick exchange and threw 84 across the infield. He can play on the run and can start the double play with ease. Plays agressive and covers ground.

+ 2019 C Mason Thomchesson (Klein Collins HS) is a blue-collar “gritty” backstop that is still looking for a place to play.  He started for Klein Collins all year in 2018, catching a solid pitching staff. Posted pop times of 1.97-2.05 with a top velocity from the crouch of 77 mph. Really nice job during the bullpen session where he blocked and received well. Most importantly, we know as recruiters that catchers need to love it, and I truly believe Mason loves to catch. He took a ball right off the through on a bounced fastball. Didn’t flinch, didnt say a word, just kept on going and performed well. Tough kid that will likely find a home very soon.

+ 2020 C Kolby Bryant (McKinney North HS) did an outstanding job of receiving during the bullpen session. He has good mobility in his lower half that allows him to sit deep in his one-stance. Super soft hands with a quiet body, blocks easy and centers the ball up. Posted pop times of 2.00-2.17 with a top velocity from the crouch of 72 mph.

+ 2020 RHP Brayden Loving (Magnolia HS) has a projectable, durable frame at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds. The right-hander topped out at 88 mph, sitting mostly 85-86 from a high slot. Slider was 73-75, while his changeup was 77, and he threw a split at 76 mph.

+ 2021 RHP/SS Dylan Kerbow (The Woodlands HS) has a loose arm swing with a quick hand out front from a ¾ to low-¾ slot with a sinking fastball at 80-82. Shows good feel for spin with both his curveball and slider in the 70-72 range. Changeup had plus arm side fade at 75-77. Keeps a bend in his torso as he works down the mound and appears to be a guy that can change arm slots and give hitters fits with feel for three pitches.

+ 2020 OF Nolan Troy (Oak Ridge HS) has a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds. He started the day with a 6.94 60-yard dash, then posted a top exit velocity of 95 mph with raw stregnth at the plate. Threw 85 from the outfield and pitched at 79-82 mph with a 71-76 mph curveball and a legitimate split-finger at 73-74 mph for his third pitch.

+ 2020 RHP Seth Trevino (Klein Collins HS) was 79-81 with a 68-69 mph curveball and 76-77 mph changeup. There is still plenty of projection and athleticism to suggest that he has not reached his ceiling yet.

+ 2020 RHP/C Dane Swoboda (Rober E. Lee HS) throws a heavy fastball with tilt from a high slot at 82-83 mph. His curveball has downer shape at 66-69, while his slider has shorter, later action at 69-71 mph.

+ The best 60-yard dash of the day belonged to 2020 SS Eric Ortiz (Cypress Ranch HS), who posted a 6.8.
