SEASON PREVIEW
Southlake Carroll returns one of the most complete teams in Texas after winning 32 games last year. The lineup is balanced with power and speed, with table setter 2018 CF Adam Stephenson hitting in the leadoff spot. The Wichita State recruit is an elite runner puts pressure on the defense and can take away extra base hits in centerfield. 2018 OF William Quillen, also committed to Wichita State, returns in right field. Quillen has a nice combination of power and speed, to go along with a strong arm. 2018 3B Cole Johnson is one of the top hitters in the DFW Metro-plex. Johnson will hold down the hot corner at third base and provide some thunder in the middle of the order for the Dragons. Also back on the infield is 2B Cade Bell, and two-way talent 1B Nik Millsap.
The Dragons also have a ton of young talent to add to an already seasoned club. A pair of Miami commits have a chance to contribute right away in 2020 SS Jorge Figueroa, and 2020 C/RHP Yanluis Ortiz. Both are ranked in the TX 2020 Class and both were top performers at the I-10 Border Battle. Figueroa is a slick fielding shortstop with great presence and gap power. Ortiz is a power hitting catcher with a strong arm behind the plate and on the mound. 2020 Grant Golomb has a chance to be special on the mound, the right-hander was up to 87 mph this fall with a loose arm swing.
2019 LHP Cutter Sippel returns on the mound. The TCU commit was the number two starter last season and has the stuff to be a front line starter this year. Coach Vucan has a lot of options on the mound after Sippel. There are two-way players that can all pitch on varsity, including Adam Stephenson and Nik Millsap. 2018 RHP Nicco Cole is a shut down arm that could either close out games or fill a starter role. Keep an eye on 2018 RHP Joe Steeber, who Coach Vucan says could also log significant innings this year.
All-in-all, Southlake Carroll has a complete team that can win games a lot of different ways. If they perform well at all three, watchout.
