Fall Invite: Catcher and Corner Infield Analysis

In November, PBR VA/DC hosted a combined Fall Event at Virginia Sportsplex. Originally, we were set to host an Underclass Fall Invite at Old Dominion and an Unsigned Senior Showcase at Virginia Sportsplex, but inclement weather forced us to cancel the event at ODU and combine the two events into our Fall Invite, which featured players from the classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020 and represented all corners of the Commonwealth.

Today, we begin our detailed analysis of the event by looking at the catchers and corner infielders who participated in the event. Look for breakdowns of the middle infielders, outfielders, and pitchers in the coming weeks.

John Barrie C Paul VI Catholic 2019
Barrie is 5-11 with an athletic frame, he hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance. Leg kick stride on line, smooth load back to a bar, hips rotate completely with some balance to his swing. Takes barrel straight to ball, slightly uphill path with pull preference, exit velocity was 79. Behind the plate, reached for ball, otherwise clean transfer gains ground during exchange. Short loose arm action from a high three-quarters arm slot, position velocity was 70. Pop times were 2.27-2.35. Good deep stance receiving, good flexibility with sway, works up to ball and presents good strike. Ran a 7.44 60 yard dash.

Bailey Burke 1B/RHP Kettle Run 2018
Burke is 5-11 with an athletic frame and a strong lower half, he hits from the left side from an open athletic stance. Short stride, toe stays in place, short smooth load back, some rhythm to his swing. Some hip rotation and some balance to swing. Takes barrel straight to ball, level to slightly uphill swing path, line drive swing, slight pull preference, some quickness to swing. Gap power to pull side with exit velocity of 84. At first, gets body behind ball and fields with a wider base and average hands. Works through the ball, throws from three-quarters arm slot, infield velocity was 77.

Jonathan Compton C/OF Gate City 2020
Athletic physical frame at 5-foot-11, 180-pounds. Ran a 6.69 60-yard dash on damp track. Hits from an open set up with high hands above the shoulder. Short load with leg lift squaring up to baseball. Gets into backside and gets nice hip explosion through contact. Hands are short, simple, and quick to the ball that free up as they extend through contact. Did get long at times during BP, getting around the ball, but showed fast bat speed and power potential at the plate. Exit velo of 94 mph. Solid footwork and clean exchange from behind the plate. Smooth throughout, though could quicken his feet on pops. Pop time as low as 2.02. Sound receiving skills sticking ball well, though can get stiff at times. Average sway side to side, does have some room for improvement, his natural athleticism should help that continue to improve.

Nick Famiglietti 3B/RHP Briar Woods 2020
Famiglietti is 5-11 with a lanky frame, he hits from the right side from an open athletic stance. Short stride, smooth load back with slight wrap, some rhythm to his swing. Explosive lower half and some balance to swing. Short to ball with some bat speed, level line drive swing, good approach worked gap to gap, exit velocity was 82. At third, good feet, rounds ball well and fields it with a wide base and above average hands.
