Northern VA Open ID: Outfield and Catcher Analysis





 
Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted its Northern Virginia Open ID at Patriot High School. Here is a look at the outfielders and catchers that attended:

Jon Alderman, OF, Chantilly, 2017
Alderman has an athletic 5-8 frame and decent speed, running a 6.93 60. At the plate, Alderman has an athletic stance with a slight crouch and a short load back with a leg kick stride. He has an explosive lower half and a longer swing path with extension through the ball. He had an exit velocity of 76. He maintains balance throughout his swing and has average bat speed and with a pull stroke. In the field, Alderman throws from a three-quarters arm slot and has a decent exchange and release. He had a position velocity of 73.




William Balkin, OF, Osbourn Park, 2018
Balkin has a lanky 5-10 frame and ran a 7.18 60. At the plate, Balkin has an athletic stance and short load back with short stride. He maintains balance throughout his swing and has an explosive lower half. He has above average batspeed and a short stroke with some extension. He posted an exit velocity of 79 off of the tee. In the field, Balkin aggressively attacks the ball and has athletic actions and a quick release. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot and an above average arm, with a positional velocity of 82.

Mason Farman, C, Annandale, 2016
Farman has an athletic 5-10 frame. At the plate, he has an athletic stance with a slight crouch. He has no load and a leg kick stride. He has an explosive lower half and maintains balance throughout his swing. He is short to the ball and has average bat speed and good extension, posting an exit velocity of 80. He has a good approach and showed the potential for gap power to his pull side. Behind the plate, Farman has a nice wide set-up and a quick release, throwing from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action. His pop times were 2.00-2.18.




Elias Gibson, C, Hayfield, 2017
Gibson has an athletic 5-10 frame and hits from the left side. He has a crouched stance and loads up and back during his leg kick stride. He has good balance throughout his swing and an explosive lower half. He has a longer swing path and gets good extension through the ball with a pull approach. His exit velocity was 78. Behind the plate, Gibson throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action. He reaches for the ball but then has a quick release and gains ground towards his target. His throws were fairly accurate and he posted pop times between 2.22 and 2.28 and had a positional velocity of 69. Gibson also has decent speed, running a 7.25 60 yard dash.




Nick Lober, C, Osbourn Park, 2017
Lober has an athletic 6-1 frame. He has a tall stance and wraps a bit as he loads back during his leg kick stride. He has an explosive lower half and good balance throughout his swing. He had good rhythm and a pull approach during his round. He has a longer swing path but extends through the ball well and had an exit velocity of 81. Behind the plate, Lober throws from a high three quarters arm slot and gains ground towards his target during his transfer. His positional velocity was 68 and his pop times ran 2.22-2.40.




Brian Rall, C, Patriot, 2018
Rall has an athletic 6-1 frame. He hits from the right side from an athletic stance. He has a leg kick stride and no load. He has average balance throughout his swing and a decent lower half. He is short to the ball and has a line-drive approach, with an exit velocity of 82. Behind the plate, Rall throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short, loose arm action. He had a positional velocity of 75. Rall has a quick release and his throws were very accurate with pop times from 1.97-2.13.




Tyler Solomon, C, Battlefield, 2017 (Vanderbilt)
Solomon has an athletic 6-4 frame that is very projectable. He has decent speed for his size, running a 7.40 60 yard dash. Solomon is a switch hitter, and from the right side he has an upright stance, a leg kick stride, and a bit of a wrap to his load. He has a long path but an explosive lower half and a very fast bat and he gets good extension through the ball. From the left side, Solomon has an athletic stance, a big leg kick and a smooth back load. He has good rhythm and balance throughout his swing. He has an explosive lower half and is short to the ball with explosive bat speed. He has legit home run power and posted and exit velocity of 95. Behind the plate, Solomon throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action that is very loose, hitting 77 on his throw downs. He has a quick release and gains ground as he works through the ball. He showed decent accuracy on his throws and all of his pop times were between 1.97 and 2.00.



Luke Stevens, C, Patriot, 2019
Stevens has an athletic 5-10 frame. He hits from the right side with an athletic stance. He has a smooth back load and a slight leg kick. He maintains average balance throughout his swing and has a decent lower half. He has a long swing path with good extension and average bat speed, with an exit velocity of 74. Behind the plate, Stevens throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short, stiff arm action. He has a long release and gains ground towards his target during his transfer. His pop times were between 2.41 and 2.53.

 

 

 

Matthew Thomas, C, Lake Braddock, 2018
Thomas has an athletic 5-11 frame. He hits from the right side and has a tall stance. Thomas has a smooth back load and a slight leg kick stride. He has an explosive lower half and excellent balance throughout his swing to go with good bat speed. He is short to ball and gets good extension through it with a gap to gap approach and power potential. He had an exit velocity of 81. Behind the plate, Thomas has good hands and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a quick arm action and a positional velocity of 72. His exchange was a bit slow and his 2.16-2.18 pop times should improve significantly when he speeds it up.
