Fox Cities Preseason ID: Infield Analysis

Today we continue to roll out analysis from the Fox Cities Preseason ID Showcase with the infield prospects prospects.

Power hitting first baseman Griffin Doersching takes the top spot in the infield showing an event best 110 mph exit velocity from a tee. At 6-foot-4, 250-pounds Doersching shows athleticism at first base with soft hands and good feel for the bag.

UW-Milwaukee commit Nate DeYoung showed a loose, easy swing at the plate and athletic actions in the infield. SS Nicholas Urban-Michalak is a quick twitch athlete with big tools. Urban-Michalak threw 93 mph across the infield, ran the 60 at 6.74, and showed strength thru conact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Bryce Cross showed natural actions at shortstop and solid tools running a 7.08 60 yard dash.

Let’s take a look at the top infield prospects from the event.

Top Prospects 

1. Griffin Doersching, 1B, Greendale, 2017
Currently ranked No. 8 in Wisconsin class of 2017. 6-foot-4, 250-pound right-handed hitting first baseman with an extra large strong frame with athleticism. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a leg kick stride and slight collapse on the backside with good balance. Gap to gap hitter with explosive batspeed and a level path with extension thru contact. Good approach at the plate, consistently hitting line drives up the middle. One of the premier power hitters in the Midwest in the 2017 class, 110 mph exit velocity from a tee. 7.37 runner in the 60. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot, throws showed carry throwing 88 mph across the infield. Showed feel for the bag at first with athletic actions and fluid footwork. Soft hands, picking throws at first.

2. Nate DeYoung, 3B, Xavier, 2018
UW-Milwaukee commit. Currently ranked No. 11 in Wisconsin class of 2018. 6-foot-4, 195-pound left-handed hitting third baseman with a lanky frame. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Athletic actions with fluid footwork and soft hands. Threw 81 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a tall, slightly open stance with a smooth load and good balance. Loose easy hands create plus batspeed. Fluid rhythm at the plate. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.32.

3. Nicholas Urban-Michalak, SS, Park, 2017
Quick, twitch athlete with wiry strength at 6-foot-1, 176-pounds. Right-handed hitting shortstop. Toolsy player running the 60 at 6.74. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws showed carry throwing an event best 93 mph across the infield. Plays fast with quick footwork while playing thru the ball. At the plate hits from a crouched stance with a long stride and good balance. Line drive gap to gap hitter with fluid rhythm and some explosion in the hands. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee.

4. Bryce Cross, SS, Hortonville, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with an athletic frame. Defensively has a loose arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry, throwing 82 mph across the infield. Soft, sure hands with fluid, athletic actions and a quick, clean exchange. Showed the ability to play on the run. Offensively hits from an athletic, slightly open setup. Loose, athletic swing with good balance. Level path with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.08. One of the top middle infielders in the Wisconsin 2017 class.

5. Drew Behling, 3B/RHP, Waupun, 2017
6-foot, 200-pound left-handed hitting 3B/RHP with a strong frame. Offensively hits from a tall, open stance with a short stride back to even with good balance. Pull power hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Creates leverage in swing with a good approach. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.63. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with carry. Showed good body control with average hands. Threw 80 mph across the infield. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short arm action. Drop and drive delivery with a square landing and recoil on finish. Fastball sat 78-81 mph. Curveball sat 63-66 mph. Got around slider at 66-67 mph. Maintained armspeed on changeup with sinking action at 73-75 mph.

6. Ryan Brouch, 2B, Appleton West, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting second baseman with an athletic frame. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Quick footwork with soft hands, can play on the run. Threw 80 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from a slightly open stance. Gap to gap hitter with a short, uphill path. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.72.

7. Logan Grunenwald, SS, Wausau West, 2017
6-foot-3, 192-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a lanky, athletic frame. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short leg lift stride. Gap to gap hitter with an uphill path and a fast bat. Fluid rhythm at the plate. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.04. Defensively has a short, loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball with athletic actions. Threw 82 mph across the infield.

8. Joseph Lipsky, SS, Lake Country Lutheran, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a solid frame. Offensively hits from a wide base with an open setup. Short level path with extension thru contact. Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.55. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 81 mph across the infield.

9. Pierce Blohowiak, C/OF, Xavier, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting utility player with an athletic frame. Currently ranked No. 34 in the Wisconsin Class of 2018. Defensively took drills in the infield, outfield, and behind the plate. Showed best in the outfield where he has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a quick exchange. Threw 85 mph from the outfield. In the infield showed solid footwork with average hands. Threw 77 mph across the diamond. Behind the plate showed good blocking skills with a quick release. Popped 2.05-2.12 and threw 70 mph from the crouch. Showed soft hands receiving in bullpens. Offensively hits from a wide base with a short stride and good balance. Loose swing with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 87 mph exit velocity from a tee. Solid runner in the 60 at 6.90.

10. Aaron Chapman, SS, Waterford, 2018
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. Offensively hits from a slightly open stance with a leg kick stride and average balance. Line drive gap to gap hitter with a level path and extension thru contact. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.13. Defensively has a long, loose arm action from an over the top slot. Average hands, fields the ball deep. Threw 82 mph across the infield.

5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. Defensively has short arm action from a ¾ slot. Threw 69 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a wide base with a balanced setup. Pull hitter with a long path. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.07.

Hunter Barber, RHP/SS, Oshkosh West, 2017
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting RHP/SS with a strong frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Drop and drive delivery with a high leg kick. Works in line with home plate with an athletic finish and some deception. Worked down in the zone with his fastball that sat 75-76 topping out at 77 mph. Changeup showed sinking action at 71-73 mph. Offensively hits form an open stance with a toe tap stride and average balance. Uphill path with average bat speed. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Jordan Brewer, 2B, Oshkosh West, 2018
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting second baseman. Offensively hits from an open stance with a smooth load to backside and short stride back to even. Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm and a short level path, occasionally gets uphill. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.27. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Quick footwork with average hands. Threw 70 mph across the diamond.

Brandon Diedrich, RHP/SS, Neenah, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting RHP/SS with a lanky frame. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing and slight crossfire action. Uses a slide step from the stretch. Fastball showed running action at 76-78 topping out at 79 mph. Fastball sat 68-72 mph. Curveball sat 61-64 mph. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Threw 71 mph across the infield. Threw 81 mph from the outfield. In the infield showed good body control throwing 76 mph across the infield. Offensively hits from  a balanced setup with a reverse toe tap stride. Uphill path. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.24. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm circle on the backside. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate and a square landing. Good balance throughout delivery. Fastball sat 74-75 topping out at 76 mph. Curveball and slider showed same action. Throws slider with more conviction at 70-71 mph. Curveball sat 67-69 mph.

Trenton Woebbeking, SS, Medford, 2017
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. Offensively hits from a tall, narrow setup with a short stride and average balance. Short path with average bat speed. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.48. Defensively has a short arm action from a ¾ slot. Threw 67 mph across the infield.
