Prep Baseball Report's MN Winter Open event took place on Saturday, March 10, 2018. The event was held at Starters Sports Training in Shakopee, MN. The event featured prospects from the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 classes who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff.

6-foot-1, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.27 home-to-first time. Square stance, body load, rolls hands over early through contact, pull approach, ground ball contact, 68 mph exit velocity. Solid fielder, active feet, ability to receive around bag, avg. arm and accuracy across, 69 mph arm strength across field. On mound; steps forward to roll into crouched balance point, 2-piece arm action and delivers from side-arm slot, lands inline to catcher, arm travels across body, with avg. drive down mound. Fastball has heavy feel to arm-side with running action at 66-68 mph. 2/8 breaking ball has avg. spin and shape. Varying run and cut action on changeup with solid fade.
Blake Ask, RHP/3B, Wayzata, 2019
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled delivery, high tuck and turn balance point, repeats delivery well, wrap on back side of arm action, clean out front with solid hand speed. Fastball was 78-81 mph, straight, with flashes of heavy feel for strikes. Tight spin with solid depth on 11/5 breaking ball. Shows appropriate run and sink on changeup in bottom of zone. 4.76 home-to-first time. Rolling hand trigger, body load, when on time- squares baseball with authority, gap to gap approach, flashes pop in bat, 83 mph exit velocity. sure hands with soft glove, high fielding position, works through baseball, accurate to bag with carry on throws, 83 mph arm across infield.
Brady Bean, RHP, Farmington, 2019
6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Long athletic frame. Rocker step into quick tuck and turn balance point. Longer strides down mound, solid extension and finish, and flashes arm quickness from high ¾ slot. Fastball was 82-84 mph, hides ball from hitter, with slight running action. 12/6 breaking ball is thrown with good hand speed; late sharp break for strikes. Slider has tight spin for strikes. Fastball arm speed on changeup with late run and sink.
Jacob Berg, RHP, Sleepy Eye, 2019
5-foot-11, 215-pound right-handed pitcher. Long rocker step, travels across rubber, short balance point, out front over front leg on release. Short arm action, ball jumps on hitter, sneaky quick, at 79-82 mph for strikes. Raw mechanics on breaking ball; small break with 11/5 shape. Stiff actions on changeup with avg. fade and sink.
Kyle Celatka, LHP/1B, Prior Lake, 2020
6-foot-2, 171-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; small step into higher front knee balance point, slight crouch in posture, swings down mound, hides ball from hitter behind body, long clean arm action, with solid extension and finish. Fastball has life; jumping on hitter at 79-80 mph with heavy running action. Small break and inconsistent shape on breaking ball. Above avg. down action with run on changeup. 4.71 home-to-first time. Wide stance, barrel stays through hitting zone, shows pop in bat, gap to gap hitter, consistently barrels baseball, 80 mph exit velocity. Long rangy frame, solid fielder, makes routine plays, receives well around bag, 77 mph arm across infield.
Chris Chiriboga, RHP, Hopkins, 2018
6-foot-3, 155-pound right-handed pitcher. Uncommitted arm who has made significant strides in mechanics and velocity over last 12 months. Long lanky frame. Uptempo delivery, crouched over rubber, aggressive down mound, compact arm action, good hand quickness, with above avg. extension and finish to plate. Fastball was delivered downhill for consistent strikes with late running action at 86-88 mph. Breaking ball is thrown with good velocity, 73-76 mph, with 11/5 shape and late sharp break. Avg. feel for changeup, thrown firm, with cutting action to plate. Overall one of top uncommitted arms in state and should receive significant late interest.
Jack Clawson, RHP, Eden Prairie, 2019
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed pitcher. Solid rhythm and tempo in delivery, higher tuck and turn balance point, has extension and finish to plate. Compact arm action producing 78-79 mph heavy fastballs with flashes of running action. Breaking ball has early break with loose spin and 11/5 shape. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed with avg. fade and sink for strikes.
Joseph Enzler, RHP, Edina, 2019
5-foot-10, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. Rolls into balance point, solid body control, aggressive down mound, inline with catcher, with longer arm action from OT slot. Drives fastball downhill with varying action at 79-81 mph. Consistently lands breaking ball with good feel, 11/5 shape, and solid depth. Changeup is firm with avg. fade and sink.
Paul Girard, SS/RHP, Wayzata, 2018
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.57 home-to-first time. Open stance with body load, easy load with clean path through contact, solid bat speed and extension, mid/pull approach, consistently squares baseball, with line drive and fly ball contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Works low to ground, quick first step, sure hands, solid actions, accurate to bag with easy arm action, 82 mph arm across infield. On mound; short rocker step into tuck and turn balance point, loose arm action, lands inline with catcher, with good extension and finish to plate. Fastball has life and jumps on hitter at 81-82 mph. Above avg. slider with tight spin and late 10/4 break for strikes. Changeup is thrown at fastball arm-speed and shows late fade and sinking action.
Sam Hanson, LHP, St. Cloud Cathedral, 2018
6-foot-5, 225-pound left-handed pitcher. Highlighted in our recent “Picks to Click” article; Hanson stands at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds and has been off the radar for almost 18 months due to ACL reconstruction. Nearing 100 percent, he performed at the Minnesota Winter Open showcase last week. He has a large build with present strength, but also moves well with rhythm and athleticism. He has a clean arm action, producing 84-87 fastballs with varying late action. His best secondary pitch was a cutter/slider with late, sharp break. He projects to be a high-80s to low-90s arm. After a flurry of college interest; Hanson recently committed to D2 power-house Minnesota State- Mankato.
Patrick Hayes, LHP, Rosemount, 2019
6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed pitcher. Long lanky frame. Simple turn into slightly crouched balance point, lands in line to catcher, out and over front leg on release losing lower half power, long one piece arm action. Fastball was 75-77 mph with flashes of late arm-side run. Loose spin and early break on curveball with 1/7 shape. Solid down action and fade on changeup for strikes.
Nick Hays, RHP, Chaska, 2019
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Simple step back into balance point, easy effort, fastball jumps out of hand, with solid extension to plate. Fastball was 77-78 mph with varying action to plate. Lacks feel for breaking ball with inconsistent shape and requires additional development. Changeup is heavy with late sinking action.
Christopher Jacobs, 3B/RHP, Wayzata, 2020
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.83 home-to-first time. Square stance, hand load with knee to knee trigger, line drive swing plane with lift through contact, shows ability to go with pitch the other way, solid pop in bat with gap to gap approach, 75 mph exit velocity. Active feet, solid fielder with avg. glove, makes routine, long release on throws with accuracy to bag, 73 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step into higher balance point, low hand set, short stride down mound, lands across body, slight pie arm action, high ¾ arm slot. Fastball has slight running action at 68-70 mph; touching 72 mph. 12/6 breaking ball has loose spin with early break for strikes. Changeup is straight with avg. fade and action.
David Janssen, LHP/OF, Centennial, 2020
5-foot-9, 140-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step into higher front knee balance point, shows rhythm and tempo to delivery, long arm action with slight pause on back-side, strides slightly open with direction to catcher. Fastball was 69-72 mph with slight arm-side running action. Breaking ball has loose spin and 1/7 shape. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed; creating above avg. run and sink. 4.58 home-to-first time. Open stance, quiet actions, strides to square, consistently barrels baseball, line drive hitter, gap to gap approach, 72 mph exit velocity. Avg/solid actions in field, works through ball, low ¾ arm slot, avg. accuracy and lacks carry to target, 74 mph arm from outfield.
Max Kalenberg, 3B/RHP, Waconia, 2020
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.95 home-to-first time. Present strength, body load, aggressive swinger, line drive swing plane, flashes pop in bat, gap to gap approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Avg./solid actions, works to play low and on balls of feet, sure hands, avg. athlete, 68 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step into short balance point, aggressive down mound, lands across body, upright on release with effort. Fastball was straight at 72-74 mph. Loose shape and inconsistent feel for breaking ball. Shows feel for changeup, solid fade, and thrown consistently for strikes in bottom of zone.
Carson Karnes, LHP, Waconia, 2020
6-foot, 190-pound left-handed pitcher. Builds momentum in delivery, high front leg kick, high glove side, opens early, lands open, creates deception, hides baseball from hitter, with solid extension and finish. 81-83 mph fastball has heavy run and sink action to arm-side of plate. 2/8 breaking ball is thrown for strikes, slider/cutter, with small shape and late break. Flashes above avg. run and sink on changeup.
Wesley Kemming, RHP/OF, Lakeville North, 2019
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; small step into controlled balance point, uses lower half, clean compact arm action, easy effort on release with extension to plate, tends to turn hand over on release and not stay behind baseball. Fastball was 77-80 mph with straight action to plate. Breaking ball has cutter action and shape with small break at plate. Changeup is firm with straight action. 4.75 home-to-first time. Tall stance, body load, clean path to contact, spray contact across field, inconsistent timing/contact with barrel, 78 mph exit velocity. Athletic arm action, avg. fielder, tends to field with 2 hands, carry to target, 83 mph arm from outfield.
Jonathan Klecker, 3B/RHP, Owatonna, 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.75 home-to-first time. Body load, deeper hand position with slight arm bar, flat swing plane, gap to gap approach, underneath at contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid fielder, avg. hands and actions, plays upright at times, avg. accuracy to bag, 74 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step into medium balance point, 2-piece arm action with slight stab down on back-side, delivers from ¾ arm slot, lands hard on front foot inline with catcher. Fastball was straight at 72-73 mph for strikes. 11/5 breaking ball has loose spin and early break to plate. Changeup is thrown firm with straight action.
Justin Kloster, OF/LHP, Minnetonka, 2019
5-foot-8, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.69 home-to-first time. Square stance, solid present strength, hitchy swing, tends to roll hands early through contact, gap to gap hitter with spray contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes, large crow hop on throws, solid accuracy, tends to field on side of ball occasionally, 80 mph arm from outfield. On mound; short rocker step into crouched balance point, medium stride down mound, longer arm action, opens front side early, with stiffer finish. Fastball was 75-77 mph with cutting action to the plate. Breaking ball has small shape with early break. Changeup is firm and straight with avg. fade and sink.
Jace Kressin, LHP, Menomonie (WI), 2019
6-foot-3, 170-pound left-handed pitcher. #78 ranked player in Wisconsin 2019 class. Small step back and rolls into short balance point, uses front side in delivery, flashes live arm with hand speed, builds momentum and tempo through delivery, has extension out front to plate. Fastball was 83-84 mph, ball jumps out of hand, with late arm-side life. 2/8 breaking ball has tight rotation and above avg. depth. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and has late run and sink in bottom of zone.
Spencer Krohn, RHP/1B, Zumbrota, 2020
6-foot, 192-pound switch-hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled rocker step into balance point, lands slightly cross body, creates deception, and is aggressive down mound with extension to plate. ¾ arm slot producing 74-77 mph fastballs with late run and sink. 11/5 breaking ball has avg. depth. Changeup is firm and flat for strikes. 5.31 home-to-first time. Square stance, body load, flashes bat speed, has extension through zone, inconsistent timing and contact, follow with the bat, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism at position, sure hands, fields deep in stance occasionally, long release on throws, 75 mph arm across field.
Jonah Lewis, SS/RHP, Minnetonka, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Dakota County Tech commit. 4.84 home-to-first time. Square stance, strides slightly across body, short to contact, consistently squares baseball, flashes bat speed with solid present strength, gap to gap approach, 90 mph exit velocity. Active feet in field with sure hands, clean transfer, works through ball, has carry and accuracy to bag. On mound; short turn into controlled balance point, pause at top, explodes down mound, quick compact arm action, with athletic finish. Fastball was 81-83 mph with cutting action to plate. Breaking ball flashes tight spin with late small break. Solid action on changeup, thrown firm, with avg. fade.
TJ Martin, LHP/OF, Holy Angels, 2019
6-foot-5, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall lanky frame. Quicker tuck and turn delivery, short arm action, hides ball behind head, decent body control, will only improve with added strength. Works fastball downhill with slight running action at 76-77 mph. 1/7 breaking ball has inconsistent shape and break but has tight spin and should continue to improve. Slows arm slightly on changeup; solid fade with flat action. 5.02 home-to-first time. Cocks back elbow to load, hook/pull contact, flashes occasional pop in bat with long levers, pull approach with fly ball contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Easy actions and looks athletic for size, avg. quickness, works through ball, tends to shorten arm on release, solid accuracy to target, 77 mph arm from outfield.
Garrett McLaughlin, RHP, Rogers, 2020
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed pitcher. Smaller athletic frame. High leg kick with body control into balance point, long stride and uses lower half in delivery, high glove side hides baseball and creates deception. Long loose arm action, delivers from ¾ slot, creating late cutting action on fastball at 80-82 mph. 11/5 breaking ball has tight spin with late break for strikes and is a swing and miss pitch. Down-ward fade with cutting action on changeup for strikes as well. Strong follow in 2020 class.
Callub Paulson, 3B/RHP, Rice Lake (WI), 2019
5-foot-6, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.68 home-to-first time. Body load, low hand slot, flat bat plane, stiffer lower half, spray contact with gap to gap approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Tends to field flat-footed, avg. actions, short arm action, avg. carry with accuracy to target, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; short run into uncontrolled balance point, front foot far outside body, short arm action. Fastball was 76-77 mph with varying action to plate. Solid feel for breaking ball, lands for strikes, with 11/5 shape. Solid fade and sink on changeup.
Isaac Rios, RHP/OF, Superior (WI), 2019
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; steps back and through into athletic balance point, short stride down mound, short compact arm action, uses mostly upper half in delivery. Fastball is sneaky and jumps on hitter with good arm speed at 78-82 mph; touching 83 mph. Breaking ball has tight spin with late 11/5 break. Slight arm-side running action on changeup with avg. fade. 4.6 home-to-first time. Open stance, heavy shoulder load, inverted swing plane, choppy rhythm in swing, mid/pull approach with line drive contact, 82 mph exit velocity. Shows quick feet, avg. overall fielding actions, above avg. arm with carry and accuracy to target, 86 mph arm from outfield.
Noah Rodriguez, SS/RHP, New Life Academy, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.62 home-to-first time. Square stance, body load, flat swing plane, simple swing, avg. use of lower half, mid/pull approach, decent barrel contact, spray hitter, 83 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions in field, sure hands, tends to move flat-footed, solid carry and accuracy on throws, 73 mph arm across infield. On mound; stretch only, simple delivery, short arm action, lands open with front front, avg. extension to plate. Fastball was 72-73 mph, touching 75 mph, with occasional slight running action. Breaking ball has small shape with short break for strikes. Changeup is firm with straight action to plate.
Nathan Rosenberg, SS/RHP, Chaska, 2021
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.7 home-to-first time. Open stance, some rhythm in hands, loads over back leg, has extension through contact, finds barrel consistently, gap to gap hitter, 83 mph exit velocity. Behind plate; avg. direction with feet, length to exchange, one-piece arm action, currently lacks accuracy to bag, 74 mph arm strength with 2.25-2.32 pop times. Avg. actions, fields flat-footed, winds up to throw, sure hands, should continue to develop, 72 mph arm across infield. On mound; shows tempo and rhythm in delivery, higher balance point, short compact arm action, long out front, upright on release with recoil. Fastball was 72-74 mph with slight running action. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape with sweeping break for strikes. Changeup is thrown with good arm action and hand speed creating late run and sink; well above avg. for age.
Gregory Ryun, RHP/SS, Chanhassen, 2020
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short tuck and turn, medium stride length, ¾ arm slot, upright on release, throws across body, with solid hand speed. Fastball was 77-79 mph with slight cutting action for strikes. Consistent 11/5 shape and solid depth on breaking ball. Decent feel for changeup with slight cutting action and above avg. fade. 4.99 home-to-first time. Open stance, knee to knee trigger with slight shoulder load, barrel exits hitting zone early, spray contact, avg. contact, 73 mph exit velocity. Soft hands in field, avg. actions, plays flat-footed at times, shows body control occasionally with ability to throw from multiple angles, young player that should continue to develop, 75 mph arm across infield.
Wyatt Rudolf, RHP, Chanhassen, 2019
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed pitcher. Skinny frame, solid athletic actions on mound, tuck and turn at balance point, lands towards third base side, throws across body, quicker compact arm action, solid extension to plate. Fastball was 78-79 mph with varying action to plate. Consistent 11/5 shape and solid spin on breaking ball for strikes. Solid/avg. fade and sink on changeup in middle of zone.
Logan Schultz, 1B/RHP, Rosemount, 2019
6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.33 home-to-first time. Open stance, strides to square, double tap trigger, aggressive line drive swing plane, barrel exits zone early, gap to gap approach, raw inconsistent contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Tall fielding position, heavier feet, raw actions in field, 64 mph arm across field. On mound; slower tempo, medium balance point, short stride down mound, lands across body, mostly upright on release. Fastball was 67-70 mph with occasional cutting action. Loose spin with small break on 11/5 breaking ball. Straight action on changeup with minimal fade and sink.
Matt Sherman, LHP/1B, Eden Prairie, 2019
6-foot-3, 200-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; gains momentum through delivery, short rocker step, high front knee athletic balance point, 2 piece arm arm with deep draw on back-side, stiffer front glove side, lands slightly across body with solid/avg. extension to plate. Fastball was 82-84 mph, straight action, and hides ball from hitter. Breaking ball has avg. spin and shape. Changeup is straight with avg. fade and sink. 4.68 home-to-first time. Tyson Stritesky, RHP, Eden Prairie, 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed pitcher. Smaller athletic frame. Uptempo delivery, good body control, short arm action, flashes consistent life on fastball, and overall has above avg. stuff. Fastball was 79-81 mph and has late life jumping on hitter. Breaking ball is sharp with tight rotation and 11/5 shape. Solid drop action on knuckleball with firm velocity. Solid action on changeup thrown with good arm action.
Casey Trapp, LHP/OF, Centennial, 2019
5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.62 home-to-first time. Open stance, body load, hitchy swing, spray contact, gap to gap approach, 77 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes, fields on side of ball occasionally, avg. direction on throws, avg. accuracy and carry to target, 78 mph arm from outfield.

6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Rocker step, medium balance point, pause at top, pie arm action, falls down mound, upright on release, falls off to first base side. Fastball was straight at 70-72 mph. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape with short break. Has down action with solid fade on changeup.
Anthony Valeri, 1B/RHP, Osseo, 2019
6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.41 home-to-first time. Tall open stance, quiet actions, flashes pop to pull side of field, simple swing and repeats well, mid/pull approach and follow with the bat, 81 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, fields out front, makes routine plays, solid around bag receiving throws, 71 mph arm strength across field. On mound; short rocker step, medium balance point, lands across body, catapult arm action. Fastball was 70-71 mph with straight action to plate. Small shape on 11/5 breaking ball with loose spin. Changeup has avg. run and sink.
David Van Ort, LHP, Stillwater, 2018
6-foot-3, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. Rocker step into medium balance point, occasionally leaks out early away from runner, crossfire delivery, hides ball from hitter, and creates deception to hitter. Fastball was delivered on tilted plane, solid arm quickness, at 77-79 mph. Inconsistent shape and spin on 1/7 breaking ball. Split has late drop and is effective in bottom half of zone.
Matthew Wallace, RHP/1B, Maple Grove, 2020
6-foot, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step, travels across rubber, avg. tempo in delivery, strides across body, upright finish, short arm action. Fastball was 70-73 mph with straight action to plate. 11/5 breaking ball has loose spin, loopy, with early break. Running action to arm-side of plate on changeup. 5.02 home-to-first time. Open stance, strides to square, choppy rhythm, inconsistent bp during event, avg. barrel skills, 79 mph exit velocity.
