THE FIVE: South Bay 2021s
Joya is a player I’m very high on and this summer he will put himself on the map with colleges and professional teams. This summer Joya can really separate himself as one of the best left-handed pitchers in the 2021 class. Has a big frame, athletic, young body and lots of physical projection. Joya already is physically strong but he still has a lot of room to grow. His fastball has life consistently 86-88 and hitting 89 mph. His fastball looks faster than it is because of his over-the top arm angle and very good extension. His fastball has a lot of movement as it runs into lefties and away from righties. He is young right now so the movement takes over occasionally. But with maturity, innings and good coaching it will develop nicely. His curveball is developing and will be a nasty strikeout pitch when he learns how to develop it. Doesn’t throw changeup much but has good deception from fastball. His control is okay, young and raw and right now has so much movement he can’t control at times. Will become better when he adds more innings. Has a strong presence on the mound, advanced for his age. Joya wins with his natural ability, right now he is just better than everyone in city section. As he matures I feel he will be able to dominate hitters with his stuff, as his off-speed continues to get stronger and his command is consistent. Joya is going to be a name to watch for colleges and eventually for the 2021 draft class.

4/02/19

2021, LHP/OF (Uncommitted) Anthony Joya has a large frame that is big and athletic. The arm action Is easy out of the windup and stretch, using natural strength to generate power. Joya gets extension on delivery throwing from an over-the-top arm angle with a live fastball that has easy velocity and extension while flashing arm side action. Off-speed has some loose movement, and is effective when controlled. Doesn’t throw the change-up much but has good deception from fastball. Carries himself well on the mound and is a competitor. Joya struggles with control now, but he’s so young in his development that he will undoubtedly get stronger with more innings. When he commands his stuff is when you get flashes of his potential. With his extension and easy velocity he is very hard to hit. Joya went 6 2/3 innings 4 hits, 3 runs, and 8 strikeouts.
