1/5/19- SoCal Preseason All-State (fielding) - continues to show excellent footwork and soft hands while playing the infield. Rangy and athletic, Veloz was able to get to every ball under control allowing him to make strong, accurate throws across the diamond. Has some sneaky power at the plate where his fast hands allow him to get to the inside pitch with the barrel. Present gap-to-gap approach.
1/5/19- SoCal Preseason All-State (pitching) - 6-foot, 180 pounds, athletic build with room for growth. High three-quarter arm slot featuring a smooth arm path and quick delivery. Creates momentum and power from the lower half and accompanies that with fluid mechanics. Command was erratic at times caused by a drastic glove side pull and first base side finish. Featured a power slider that flashed strikeout pitch potential at the next level from the same arm slot as the fastball. Projects well with added strength and velocity, plus slider could make him a strong bullpen asset down the line.
8/1/18 - Six-foot, 183-pound, strong, lean, and muscular, Veloz is a shortstop/right-handed pitcher who shows above average tools at each position. At shortstop he plays with a quiet confidence in his footwork - which is excellent - and his arm which flashes a tick above average. Veloz throws on the run very well with accuracy. It's almost as if he sets himself up to do just that. His arm has the ability to make throws from all angles with accuracy. At the plate Veloz employs a controlled leg kick to initiate his swing before using his fast hands to drive the barrel through the hitting zone on a level path to-and-through the ball. Maintains barrel angle through the zone throughout the swing. Shows some pull side power while employing a line drive, gap-to-gap approach. On the mound Veloz shows a quick arm speed from a low ¾ arm slot that is easy and repeatable. His rhythm is smooth and maintains level shoulders while landing inline before falling off to the first base side. His fastball shows some late running action to the glove side and topping at 87 mph. His curveball shows an 11/5 shape with downer action from nearly the same arm speed as his fastball. And his changeup shows some fading action with run to the arm side. Shows the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes.
8/1/18 - (Pitching) Six-foot, 183-pounds, medium, muscular frame with strength throughout particularly in the upper half where his shoulders are wide and strong down through the arms. Full arc in the back with a hint of a wrist wrap. Shows good extension down to the target. A bit of a tilt and topple delivery as he falls off to the first base side after release. Starts tall before dropping and driving down the mound. Shows excellent command of the fastball which flashes hints of glove side run as he pulls arm through delivery. Keeps the pitch at or below knee level and throws strikes with it. Curveball is tight with 11/5 shape and late breaking action. Shows good command of the pitch working downhill with it. Changeup flashes run to the armside with some feel and command. Veloz shows the ability to throw the three pitches for strikes and projects as a potential starter at best and a bullpen arm at worst. He's also an excellent shortstop with some pull side power in the bat.
