Vs Palo Alto: Ashford was one of the better hitters for San Benito last season before an injury knocked him out entering the playoffs and he looks ready for a big senior season. The high-waist, athletic frame has continued to strengthen though there is still some space available for more as he fills in. The athleticism comes easy and he was able to get to it especially in the OF to track balls down where it matches well with his above-average arm. In RF throws were consistently to bags with life during pre-game and he was able to prevent runners from taking the next bag during the game. At the dish the opened stance keeps hands at the back shoulder with relaxed elbows pulling the hands back deep on a high front knee. Barrel works upwards having a high finish; times where his head can pull early and bring the barrel with it, but others where he worked more flat in the zone and on plane. Picked up two hits on the day beating out an infield single up the middle (4.36 H-1st) and then having a linedrive to LF. Showed his just above-average speed stealing 2nd on a CHG after his INF 1B.

At Palma Uncommitted. Ashford didn’t have the best day at the plate (3K), but it was actions and skills that caught my attention not the results. In RF he showed off a solid average arm keeping balls on a low trajectory to bases being quick and compact. The body is long and very lean projecting well with his current footspeed. His 1st two AB’s he looked to drop down bunts from the RHH and I had him down the line 3.95-4.1 on those attempts even though the balls went foul. Speed carries to basepaths and into RF where he showed solid range and the ability to take a base. Will need to focus on shortening up the swing because with his speed he needs to be on base more.
