4/23/19

V Monte Vista - San Jose State Commit. Large frame with length in limbs and sloped shoulders; physical build with lean, muscular strength throughout. Side-step and pause with hands staying at waist before lifting with average front knee staying tall on slightly bent back leg. Arms break cleanly with length out of the glove showing hand behind his back; strong arm gets to 3/4 release with extension out over front leg. Delivery has some cross-fire actions working through it as his hips are athletic and flexible; times where it affects his control from over-rotation. FB 86-91 MPH with velo dropping in 4th to 83-85 MPH before rebounding to 87-88 MPH in final inning of work. FB had heavy arm-side run and sink with the ability to use on both sides and go back-door; swing and miss up through the top of the zone. Used two different breaking balls with a more traditional CB showing short overhand spin with flashes of bite (72-75 MPH) and a SLD that was late with tight spin and bite off the plate glove-side (78-82 MPH). Showed feel of both off-speed pitches with the SLD being a swing-and-miss pitch and the CB being used more often to set up the SLD/FB combo.  Went right after hitters inducing lots of weak ground-balls. 6IP, 1R, 6H, 1BB, 7K

San Jose State commit; big durable build and present day strength. Long easy arm action, high-3/4 slot, takes arm behind his body to the 1st base side on backside of the arm action, lands soft on stride leg and was able to control his delivery all game while holding his stuff for 7 complete innings. The fastball was pretty steady in the 86-88 mph range, with a bump of 87 in the 7th, so it's a strong arm and real arm strength. Not tremendous arm speed but definitely a strong arm. There was some occasional sink to the fastball which comes from the slot he throws from. Saw three speeds of breaking pitches, 70-72 mph for what we will call a curveball, 73-75 mph that was more of a gradual breaking slurve , and 77-82 mph for what at first resembled a cutter but then got more tilty and sharper in the late innings and look like a fairly true slider (listed as a slider in stats, coach calls it a cutter). The raw stuff and his durability are intriguing though the arm action and delivery do not create any deception. Good mound presence though will have to improve at controlling the running game.
