Game Performance

5/20/25
Severns looked every bit the part of an elite Division 2 shortstop in Etiwanda’s playoff win over Gahr, delivering a standout performance both at the dish and on the diamond. At the plate, the senior right-handed hitter went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored, showing excellent bat-to-ball skills and a mature, disciplined approach in the leadoff spot. All three of his hits went to the opposite field, a testament to his ability to stay with the ball outside in the zone and use all parts of the field. While all his hits were singles, they were hard-earned as he extended many counts battling two strikes. He doesn’t show big power in the swing just yet, but the way he consistently makes solid contact gives him plenty of offensive upside moving forward. Defensively, Severns was arguably the best player on the field. He played shortstop with confidence, composure, and a clear understanding of the position. His quick feet, smooth hands, and strong, accurate arm allowed him to make several tough plays look routine, including a few that most shortstops at the high school level don’t get to. His range and instincts stood out just as much as his physical tools, and his overall baseball IQ and awareness were obvious from just as early as warmups. Whether it was charging a slow roller, getting to balls up the middle, or positioning himself properly, Severns controlled the infield and set the tone for his team. Simply put, he was the engine on both sides of the ball for Etiwanda and a huge reason for advancing to the quarterfinals.
