7/20/21
Cape Cod- A breakout star for Oregon's regional-hosting club this spring, Smith hit .324/.417/.533 with 24 doubles in 225 at-bats while showing excellent control of the strike zone (31-32 BB-K) for the Ducks. He followed it up with a strong summer for Y-D, hitting .278/.356/.435 with four homers, six doubles and 23 RBIs in 115 at-bats, serving as a key catalyst and run producer in the No. 2 hole. A stocky 5-foot-11, 200-pound left fielder, Smith has surprising strength in his compact frame, with a simple approach and a short lefthanded swing that produces consistent, hard line-drive contact. He stands out for his excellent pitch recognition as well as his innate bat-to-ball skills, and we saw him drive low-90s fastballs to the opposite-field wall and to the pull side. Smith is a fringe-average runner whose instincts and aggressiveness make him a very good defender in left field. He's a classic high-energy baseball rat who is a lot of fun to watch, and his hit tool puts him on the prospect radar for the 2022 draft.
