Norcal ProCase

Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. Lithe and lean, well-proportioned and streamlined body.

Hit: RH - One of my criticisms of Haskins, most recently in the spring season, was that he had a tendency to be long to the ball, particularly vs higher velocities. The swings I saw were those of a player trying to get to his power. Well, what we saw at the ProCase was a tightened up swing, much shorter, on plane and mechanically sound. His Blast plane score of 60 rates in the above average range (13.6% achieve that average). His average bat speed was 70.2m average rotational acceleration was 16.3 (g), with an average attack angle of 15 degrees. His early connection score of 89 degrees rates right with the target 90 degrees in the Blast ideal ranges.

Power: 101 EV w/wood during the BP round is a pretty sound indication of his hand speed (average peak hand speed 21.4) ability to be on time with his body fully in sync to drive the baseball. As he gains strength in the years that he physically matures, there will be power that shows up. His attack angle will play as doubles and line-drive type home runs down the road and play from gap to gap. If I had to grade the future power grade for Haskins it would be above average.

Field: Quick feet, moves quicker than his raw footspeed. Soft hands, plays well on the move where he gets more smooth than on balls right at him. Footwork around the bag showed well at both SS and 2B. Good concentration to and through the ball. Could play a little lower to and through the ball while eliminating some of the choppy steps and allowing his arm to not have to rush to keep up with his feet.

Arm: SS mph - 89 - The arm is not only strong but tracks accurately and true across the diamond. Plenty enough arm to play from the hole on backhand plays and play around the bag when he might not have time to get his feet underneath him. Finishes his throws well and that same concentration he has through the catch also shows up in his throws. Grades out as a future above average defender at SS.

Run: 7.01 - Smooth runner, powerful strides, not a burner but certainly not slow by any means.

Summary: The tool set, the professional approach, the trend of continued improvement to the various aspects of his game, all of that suggests he's got as good of a shot to reach his potential ceiling. Likely heads off to college, gets some important time as a freshman if not a full time starting gig, settles in as a starter by year two and as the 2024 draft rolls around he projects to be one of the top college SS in that draft.

2/22/20

vs De La Salle - Stanford commit; Lean and wiry strong 5-foot-11 165-pounds, but by the end of the day he flashed the defensive tools and projectable offensive talents that we've come to appreciate. A couple of rough at-bats early ended with Ks, one vs top HS 2020 LHP Kyle Harrison on a 93 mph heater up and away and one on a FB that was off the plate. He bounced back to find contact in subsequent at-bats, including a double to left field. There is some swing length that shows up vs higher velocities, but the swing works easily. Defensively he is smooth to the ball with excellent footwork and plenty of arm for the SS position.

NorCal Preseason All-State: I saw a lot of Haskins in 2019 and he showed very well against some of the best in Northern California during the event. Haskins’ frame has added good strength to it and the body doesn’t look like it’s done growing; he could be over 6-0 in the near future with more strength helping. Keeping even hands and a high back elbow, Haskins peppered gap-to-gap with carrying linedrives showing an easy and efficient swing that has shortened up the barrel path to the baseball (90 EV). On defense he played with some of the best range adjusting to the baseball and allowing his quick feet to get into the OF on both sides of him. The glove work was impressive fielding everything with just the glove as he kept momentum to his targets before allowing the loose arm to make every throw a SS needs to make (87 MPH). Hard-working and dedicated to his craft, Haskins has a bright future

4/12/19

At St. Francis - Stanford Commit. Medium frame is starting to fill in as he matures with more strength in upper half. Put together three strong AB’s reaching base three times and flashed his growing pop. Balanced stance with slight crouch showing quick hands with the ability to stay tight to the body; bat worked on short upwards arc with strong barrel turn working through the zone. 3B into LCF gap getting mistake FB and driving it. Showed decent running ability with good angles. Continues to show he can stick on the left side with average range and footwork at SS position; arm is solid for position and understanding timing more and more as he spends more time at the position.

3/23/19

Vs Jesuit - Stanford Commit. Lean, medium frame with growing strength throughout frame; still some physical projection and ability to keep growing. Started at SS with normal starter out with injury. Showed he’s got the ability to stick at SS after previous viewings have been at 3B with plenty of arm strength and first step quickness. Stands slightly opened and balanced with high hands and a high back elbow keeping bat vertical. Knee tucks with leg kick as hands work down staying away from body. Bat works on upwards arc with flashes of speed in barrel turn as it works onto plane showing full extension in turns as he finishes over stiff front leg. When in time bat shows the ability to drive the ball to both games; some swing and miss against FB’s. Doubled deep over the CF head into RCF in last AB setting up winning run. Athletic out of the box with quick feet showing strong stride length (4.6T, 4.5 H-1st). Clean defensive actions with very good footwork showing timing and rhythm at position; range into OF and both sides with ability to drop step and create angles for spacing. Arm is strong and shows plenty of carry; made a great play deep in the hole throwing a strike across the diamond with good carry.

2/23/19

2/21-2/23/19 - 3 Games - The Stanford commit played solid defense at 3B during the weekend and continues to show he has good rhythm and timing over there with plenty of arm to stick on that side of the diamond. I liked that he executed the little things at the plate like taking his walks and also looking to drop down a drag bunt, one time for a hit. His swing has a pull side focus and will need to make some more hard contact to both sides of the field to reach his full potential. Playing as a sophomore, for the first time on Varsity, there are high expectations and I’ve been impressed that he hasn’t let the defeats wear him down. One big game could turn Haskins around at the plate.

2/16/19

vs De La Salle - showed he can stick on the left side of the infield starting at 3B before moving to SS later on in the scrimmage. He’s got good footwork and plenty of arm. How much he hits may determine how much he plays for the Warriors. His first two AB’s were against high quality arms from De La Salle and he swung through some fastballs he’s going to have to hit. Look for him to work in at 2B and 3B for the Warriors. If his bat gets hot that will extend the lineup and give Valley Christian another option.

9/28/18

The Stanford commit showed a very projectable frame with present skill on both sides of the ball that will carry over to the next level. He's got a medium frame with a high waist and wide, sloped shoulder while showing lean muscles and projects to be able to add to the frame without taking away from his current game. Offensively he has a very quiet and simple set up keeping his hands tight and lower in the back pocket with a high back elbow before working the hands back early with a slight foot lift for timing. The hands stay back while the lower half starts moving forward and are very quick getting onto and staying on plane for a long time with his balanced swing. He showed in BP the ability to drive the ball into both gaps then showed off surprising pop in game driving a ball over the CF head for a triple. In game he showed patience not seen by many Sophomores regularly taking off-speed pitches while staying balanced then adjusting to be on time for the fastball. Defensively he showed above average rhythm and timing with excellent feet and the ability to quickly react on the left side of the diamond. The arm is average, but showed a quick release and the ability to make throws from different angles especially when he caught a runner trying to extend a 2B at 3rd base. The firm throws across the diamond indicate there's more there when needed. He's an average runner (4.75T H-3rd) using a shorter, choppy stride length that gets better underway rather than initial burst out of the box. The actions on the diamond just ooze with potential over the next seasons.
