USA CNT: Stands 6-foot-5, 200 pounds with a frame that is likely to add strength and increased velocity in the near future. But, for now, he is a pitchability-type lefthander with good feel for three distinct pitches: 90-92 mph fastball, 79-80 breaking ball and a same speed changeup. Both offspeed pitches were below average on this look with Futrell slowing his hand speed at release of his change-of-pace. He also creates deception in his delivery with a high glove and quick arm action. Just as he has done throughout his college career at Vandy, Futrell quickly and efficiently gathered outs during his three inning, 37-pitch outing on day one of the trials. He scattered two hits while walking two and striking out two. A model of consistently throughout his two year college career, Futtrell doesn’t have the present raw stuff that teams select in the first round, but with modest gains to his fastball velo, he could easily elevate himself into Day One discussions.

1/17/18

Vanderbilt recruit. Stands at 6-foot-3, 160 pounds on a very projectable frame with natural athleticism and an above average feel for the game. Futrell stands out all over the field, but on the mound he really impressed as he struck out all five batters he faced during the scrimmage. He has a loose, easy working arm and featured a fastball that sat 80-82 mph with run along with a 68-70 mph curveball that showed depth and shape, throwing it for strikes. At times throughout his windup he has a slight pause in his leg kick, looking to throw off the timing of opposing batters. More velocity to come as he continues to fill out his frame and mature. At the plate, he has an uphill path through the zone and creates leverage with his long limbs by showing pull side pop. From the outfield he surrounds the ball and gets behind his throws with accuracy from an over the top release. High follow prospect who will continue to see jumps in his overall game as he continues to add to his frame and matures.

8/12/17

Perhaps the biggest standout of the entire weekend. He worked out with the 2020 graduates and stood out amongst them as well. He has a thin, long frame that is ultra projectable. On the mound, the left-hander worked from a high 3/4 slot with a clean, loose easy arm action and a fastball that ranged from 79-82 mph. He also showed a feel for a curveball a 65 and a changeup at 70-72 mph. He also showed a slightly uphill swing from the left side with a feel for the barrel and some power potential. Overall, very intriguing with a high ceiling.
