3rd Team All State: Powell was the ace of the staff in leading Rockford Christian to its first state title in any sport, when the Royal Lions captured the IHSA Class 2A State Championship. This spring the hard throwing junior righty went 10-0 with a 0.39 ERA, striking out 92 in 70.2 innings pitched, allowing only 39 hits and walking only 28. The 6-foot-1 righty has been up to 87 mph, and features a hard 12/6 curveball in the 72-75 mph range. He’s currently uncommitted.
6.5.15 - 6-foot-1, 170-pound athletically built junior right-handed pitcher has gained significant velocity in the last year, going form 81-84 mph to 83-86 mph, touching 87. Works from a short, high ¾ arm slot, pitches exclusively from the stretch, toe up at balance point, rushes lower half at times, doesn’t load knee over the rubber, lands in line with home plate. Curveball displayed 11/5 shape, occasionally 12/6, thrown 72-75 mph. A few swinging strikeouts had late, downward action. Will add velocity as he continues to physically mature.
6/12/14 - 6-foot, 155-pound two-way talent impressed on the mound and in the outfield with arm strength. On the hill fastball sat 81-84 mph with erratic command, but late life when in the zone. Threw both curveball and slider. Slider showed better with late break from 74-75 mph touching 78 once. Pitched exclusively out of the stretch from a high ¾ arm action with toe pointed up at balance point. Showed some rhythm with delivery, but rushed at times. Also threw 81 mph from the outfield from an aggressive crow hop. Hit from a balanced setup coiling front foot/hip to load lower half producing exit velocity up to 78 mph.
