6/18/15 - 6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed pitcher, loose wiry frame. Smooth athletic delivery, works online with squared landing. Loose, quick arm speed, over the top slot, regular effort. Showed control of his fastball, 85-87 mph touching 88 mph, runs to his arm side. Curveball has 12/6 action, 70-72 mph. Slight sinking action on his changeup, 79-81 mph, near fastball arm speed. Also flashed a knuckleball at 75 mph.
5.2.15 - 6-foot-2, 155-pound lanky and athletic RHP was up to 88 mph in three-inning outing. Long, loose, over-the-top arm slot, impressed with feel for three pitches in a tough outing, allowing seven runs in three innings against an aggressive Galesburg lineup. Fastball sat mostly 84-86 mph, displaying late cutting action, but touched 87-88 mph several times. Pitched primarily out of the stretch, velocity played up a bit from the windup with bigger leg kick. Lands slightly closed at foot strike, lower half stays in line with home plate. Curveball shows 12/6 shape, late bite, 69-71 mph, future above average potential with added power. Also flashed a 78-81 mph change with feel down in the zone. Despite a tough outing, Wessels has the type of clean arm action and frame that projects to be a high 80’s to low 90’s guy, possibly as soon as next year. Wessels is ranked No. 68 in Illinois' 2016 class, and impresses with a projectable frame and easy arm action.
2.15.15 - Highly projectable frame, loose athlete, long and lean with room to fill out, 6-foot-2, 155-pound two-way player, like his upside. On the mound arm action is short and quick, over the top slot. Delivery worked directionally, stays on line, athletic. Fastball has run, showed ability to pound the zone, mixed in a two-seam fastball with excellent arm side running action, sat 85-86 mph, touch 87 mph. Curveball has 12/6 action, 68-71 mph, showed improved action with feel. Changeup is mostly straight, flashed sink, power changeup type, 79-81 mph. Defensively showed a live arm, carried well, loose arm action, over the top and accurate. Natural athletic defender, footwork is fluid, and plays through the baseball with proper footwork. 7.42 runner. Right-handed hitter, wide setup, heel lift stride, can get more out of lower half. Worked the middle of the field, 84 mph exit velocity from the tee.
12.14.14 - 6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder/right-handed pitcher impressed as one of the top overall prospects at this year’s Quad City Open. Hits from a balanced setup, wide base, no stride, lifts front heel, hands start back, load back and up smoothly, short path, occasional extension, line drives from gap-to-gap with 83 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, threw 86 mph in the outfield from short, over-the-top arm slot with accuracy, plays through the baseball aggressively. Ran a 7.52 60. On the mound, short, quick, over-the-top arm slot, toe up at balance point, slight drop and drive delivery, arches back slightly to get up top with arm action, slightly uphill shoulders, lower half stride direction stays in line with home plate, lands square and athletically. Fails to load from stretch, losing some fastball velocity. Fastball sat in the 83-85 mph range, 84-85 in windup. Secondary lags behind slowing arm on 64-66 mph curveball with 11/5 shape, erratic up in zone. Changeup showed fading action when down in the zone at 72-74 mph. Wessels has two years to refine his off speed, but his arm strength and athleticism make him a prospect to follow closely.
