All-State LHP Derek Thompson got all the shine – and rightfully so – but the Wooden Shoes wouldn’t have won their second straight Class 2A championship without Niebrugge. Long, loose and deceptively funky, Niebrugge went 7-0 with a 2.03 ERA. Armed with an 86-88 mph fastball, he recorded 66 strikeouts and 13 walks in 48.1 innings despite being hobbled with a knee injury. He also batted .408 with 10 doubles and 5 homers during their title run.
