6-foot-1, 180 pound athletic frame; SS.RHP. During batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 88 mph. Began in athletic stance with a small load, then used a toe tap before his swing. Had a flat swing plane and explosive bat speed, and he ended his swing with good extension on his finish. Showed a drive the ball approach in his path. Showed his live arm in the infield with position velocities up to 87 mph; had a twitchy exchange, next level hands and quick feet. Laterally, his movements were athletic. Showed a loose arm action and a high ¾ slot with very consistent accuracy to the bag. During the event, he clocked a 60 time of 7.19. On the mound, showing lightning arm speed he used a long arm action with a high ¾ arm angle. He threw his curveball with consistency at 71-73 mph; showed a 1/7 curveball with sharp action. He sat with his fastball at 84-85 mph; and topped out at 85 mph; which has very consistent accuracy and hard action. He successfully located his changeup for a strike at 78-80 mph.
2/16/2019: AJ Reid, SS/RHP, Highland HS, 2020, 6 foot, 170 pounds, ran a 7.36 60 yard dash, had a 91 mph exit velo and threw 87 mph across the infield. Uses early hand load to launch from, but did show bat speed. Path needs more consistency. Moved well and showed arm strength in the infield. Added footwork is needed to stay at SS. On the mound, AJ throws from a high ¾ slot and a medium arm action. Fastball has some arm side life with little effort and sat 83-86. Curveball has 12/6 shape, average spin, and sat 70-71. Changeup showed some sink and sat 77-80. AJ is an interesting spring/summer follow with possible two-way potential.
12.8.18: The 6-foot, 170 pounder ran his fastball up to 86 mph (83-85) consistently for a strike. He also spun an above average breaking ball for a strike at 70-71 with power type action and 11/5 shape. Short, loose arm action from a high 3/4 slot. Repeatable delivery with some rhythm and good direction. In the INF showcased average hands with a clean exchange. Footwork tends to get flat at times. Short, high 3/4 arm action with accuracy at 87 mph. Offensively, hits from a crouch setup, hands load back. Partial use of the lower half. Above average bat speed, level swing plane. High exit velocity of 90 mph.
7/18/17: 60 Time: 7.36, Position Velocity: INF- 79, Exit Velocity: 79. 6-foot, 155 pound sophomore RHH hits from a wide stance, using a quiet foot lift to gain small separation to start the swing. Hands stay quiet off the back shoulder, with the back side collapsing to the baseball to start hands to contact. Bat path is long and with the collapse of the back side, the barrel and shoulders work uphill to get to contact. Front side spins out, possess some pull side pop when gets the ball in. Long limbs, has a chance to generate more bat speed with stronger back side and more strength to frame in next couple years. Good instincts in the infield, moves well side to side. Fields baseball little deep to funnel into center of body, with a quick, OT release to get rid of baseball. Showed good carry on baseball when feet stayed under and worked towards first base.
3/14/15: AJ had easy effort on the mound as he worked from the stretch. His arm speed will need to improve as he gets older. He has a long overtop arm slot with good balance and smooth rhythm. He finishes in line and athletic. His FB was thrown for strikes with slight run at 66-69mph. He has a tendency to slow down his arm on off-speed. The curveball has 11/5 shape with gradual break at 58mph. Defensively, AJ has good hands and threw with accuracy. He needs to play through the ball better but does have a quick exchange. At the plate, he stays tall and loads back. He has average balance and bat speed. Bat path is level and long. He produced several line drives during BP. He has a tendency to spin his back foot rather than driving through it. Overall, he had a very good showcase for age.
