CLASS OF 2027

The familiar silk in the left-handed batter's box was on display as Schaeffer peppered balls across the cage for a mature round. Peaking at 99 mph and averaging 91-plus throughout, Schaeffer showed familiar rotational abilities with a barrel that stays in the zone for a long time. The feet took another step over the offseason as he turned in a 6.75 60-yard dash. Bellarmine recruit.

The top overall prospect at the event from my evaluations, Schaeffer had a 'mic drop' moment in batting practice after he clubbed a pair of balls deep into the parking lot with exits eclipsing 103 mph. The impact goes well-beyond the 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame and its largely attributed to the twitch and rotational capabilities that he brings to the left-handed batters' box. His rotational acceleration, measured by Blast Motion, came in as a top 5 mark amongst all participants at this event, and he flashed fringe-plus bat speed as well. I would put the pure bat-to-ball ability in a very exclusive club in terms of Indiana 2027s, and he showed it off at this event with several balls in play, highlighted by two warning track shots and a pair of infield singles; turning in H-1st times into the 4.1s. He runs better in bursts than at the top end, but the 6.84 60 he posted is an above average time that will likely still improve as he adds pure strength to the lower half. Schaeffer fills out the card with above average to better tools, and rounds out his toolset with CF upside, an instinctual route runner with above average arm strength.

- Ben Schaeffer was a breakout at this event, following the trend of late-bloomers beginning to really shine. He is undersized and lean at 5-foot-8, 150 pounds, but his pure left-handed stroke packs a punch with exits over 97 and present above average bat speed. The swing works on-plane throughout with one of the cleaner paths in the class and he has a real chance to hit with further physical development. The arm and feet have elevated with maturity, as well, now 87 from the outfield with an above average run time to pair (6.93).

Hit: LHH. Athletic setup. high back elbow. Hands start tight to the body and make a small move back. Tends to over stride. Very good turn / barrel path. Some quickness in the hands, will mature into more strength. Shows barrel accuracy.
Power: 87 max exit velocity, averaged 74.7 mph. 286' max distance.
Arm: LH. OF-80 mph. Long, twitchy am action from an over the top slot.
Defense: Swift mover in the outfield with feel for the glove. Polished throwing mechanics, easy ball to hand skills.

Hit: LHH. Balanced stance. Small hand load w/ a higher leg kick. Stays connected throughout the swing w/ a direct path. Line drive approach.
Power: 76 max exit velocity, averaged 71.3 mph. 234' max distance.
Arm: LH. OF-75 mph. Loose, quick arm that works from H 3/4 slot.
Defense: Fluid footwork, fields the ball out in front. Sure handed defender that moves well laterally.
Run: 7.89 runner in the 60.
