+ A Southern Indiana SS that I am high on, currently ranked as the No. 2 SS in the class, is Western Kentucky recruit Peyton Gray. Gray is a 6-foot-3, 195 pound throwback, three-sport athlete with significant upside. His actions are very natural & he can really catch the baseball on the infield with big arm talent to pair - reaching 92 across the diamond at this event from a playable transfer. Gray turned in a 6.89 60-yard dash in the midst of hoops season while showing a short, simple, repeatable, right-handed swing with exits currently at 98-plus & power potential looming. Gray also teased with an upside look on the mound that provides real two-way upside at the next level. He pitched at 87-89 with feel for a three-pitch mix, highlighted by a tightly-spun (2400+), upper-70s slider.

+ Gray was the best prospect in attendance bringing athleticism to pair with his physical, 6-foot-3, 195 pound frame and strong toolset. He ran better than we've seen previously, turning in a 6.87 60-yard dash before showing off a short, simple swing that plays with strength and translates to production during game looks. There is developing pull-side juice that adds excitement, but his best trait is his ability to catch and throw the baseball. Gray is a no-doubt, left-side defender at the next level with plus arm strength (92 mph) that pairs with super reliable hands. The Western Kentucky recruit can quick release, throw from multiple arm slots, and the added athleticism allows for above average range at short. Gray brings a strong mix of usable tools presently, with more to dream on, that pairs with the competitive, hard-nosed makeup that is expected from a small town, dual-sport, southern Indiana kid.

3/03/24

Gray holds legitimate two-way upside as a left-side infielder and right-handed pitcher. A high school shortstop that will likely transition to 3B at the next level, Gray has one of the best infield arms in the class, reaching 92 mph, and he plays wide & low with soft hands. Gray has steadily grown into bat strength, reaching a peak exit velocity of 95.6 mph, and his long-levered frame helps him leverage the baseball. The swing is simple and repeatable, and there is still room for added strength. The high-waisted, 6-foot-2, 185 pounder showed easy command of a three pitch mix, highlighted by an 84-86, touching 86.6 mph fastball. The arm works with a loose whip and the Western Kentucky recruit spins a tight, 73-75 mph curveball with depth, and flashed feel for a mid-70s changeup.
