The freshman RHP has a projectable, athletic 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame on the mound. Gross works from a controlled rocker-step delivery, landing square to home with some explosiveness and effort in his release. Shows solid arm speed from a long ¾ arm slot. Gross’ fastball displays arm-side run in the 93-95 mph range with spin averaging 2401 rpm.
His slider is currently his best off-speed pitch, featuring tight cut action with a late 10/4 break and spin averaging 2527 rpm. Also throws a solid 11/5 curveball with late break at 2432 rpm while still developing some feel. His changeup displays good down action and is thrown firm at 87-88 mph with fastball arm speed.
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #26 ranked player in MN 2020 class. 7.47 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, steeper uphill path through contact, solid bat speed, looks to elevate baseball, fly ball contact off bat, 91 mph exit velocity. Moves well in field, above avg. arm, hands are sure with appropriate footwork, accurate to bag with carry, profiles as third baseman/corner outfielder positionally in college, 90 mph arm across infield. On mound; projects well on mound moving forward, athletic clean arm action, throws higher percentage of strikes, has body control and repeats delivery well. Fastball was 87-88 mph; straighter action with heavier ball to plate. Tight spin on 11/5 curveball with later break. Solid down action on changeup; thrown near fastball arm speed.
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.46 runner. Good frame. Square stance with high hand set. Small leg lift and hand load back. Good rhythm into bigger swing. Lower half gets through swing. Mid/pull approach with line drive and fly ball contact. Average barrel and flashed pull pop with some strength in barrel. 94 mph exit velocity. IF- Good actions and feet to field. Works around ball to field. Fields ball clean and out in front. Solid glove. 89 mph arm strength with above average carry and average accuracy. Corner guy at next level. On mound- Solid mound presence. Smooth tempo through delivery. Clean and quick arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Fastball is straight with some run at 86-88 mph topping at 89 mph. Curveball is hard with more slider shape and needs more depth thrown at 72-74 mph. Good change-up and has fade action thrown at 80-83 mph. Solid follow on mound.
7/11/18- 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting two-way player. 7.51 runner. Balanced set-up with leg lift load. Short to consistent hard contact. Gap to gap approach with pop to middle of the field. Tends to force elevating baseball by collapse on backside. 82 mph exit velocity. IF- Fields ball well out in front. Solid overall hands and feet. 85 mph arm strength with good carry and accuracy to bag. On mound- Balanced start with good direction down mound. Fastball has late running action and thrown at 81-83 mph. Tumbling break on a 66-69 mph curveball with late depth and 11/5 shape. Change-up is average with some fade.
3/17/18- 6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Gross’ frame stands out as he is lean and athletic with long limbs, and moves well on the field. He had a natural rhythm to his swing with shorter hands load back with a leg kick. His direct path to the ball was on a flat plane, and he showed the ability to hit line drives from gap to gap without being out of control, and posted a 91 mph exit velocity. With solid hands and a strong arm (86 mph across infield), he should have a chance to stick on the left side of the diamond moving forward. Given his frame at 6-foot-2, 170-pounds, he has the look of a pitcher when he hops on the mound. He was up to 84 mph with his fastball without much use of his lower-half, and his quick arm combined with his athleticism should allow him to continue to progress in the future.
10/22/17- 6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.56 runner. Body load with leg kick trigger, slight shoulder load, shows athletic actions in box, uphill swing plane, mid/pull approach, flashes hard line drive and fly ball contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Projectable build in field. Light on his feet, good footwork, confident fielder, soft hands, accurate to bag with long release on throws, 84 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; athletic delivery with rhythm, compact arm action, has extension out front, above avg. hand speed on release. Fastball was 81-84 mph with varying action at the plate. Developing breaking ball feel; flashing tight 11/5 spin when released out front. Changeup was 70-74 mph; thrown with arm speed. Strong follow in MN 2020 class.
