2/7/15 - Indiana recruit. Highly projectable 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame, athletic build, wiry-strong with plenty of room for continued physical development. Professional offensive approach; athletic setup, pronounced leg kick back, hangs foot, consistently gets it down on time, excellent rhythm and pace; aggressive lower half, maintains balance throughout swing. Loose, athletic hands, present bat speed, slight arm bar on load, consistently pulls hands through, stays inside well, barrel stays flat through the zone, knows how to backspin the baseball; stayed middle of the field for majority of both BP rounds. Should develop more power as he fills into his frame. Recorded 93 mph exit velocity. Defensively, throws from true catcher’s arm slot, 78 mph from the crouch; had top pop times of 2.08, 2.10, 2.10, off target. Comes from good bloodlines, dad is manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and long-time major-league catcher.
8/2/14 - Matheny was 2-for-6 in the Futures Games, with a rope to right center in game one versus Illinois starter Brenden Heiss. His second hit was a walk off double to left against Michigan.  He threw out one attempted base stealer, and posted pop times of 1.97, 2.00 and 2.04 during the skill evaluations.  Matheny ran a 7.54 60.

8/25/13 - Matheny is a lanky 6-foot-1, 155-pound catcher who showed advanced ability behind the plate. Defensively, Matheny showed solid hands behind the plate, showing ability to receive in all parts of the zone and quick, natural instincts while blocking. His arm action is short and over the top with accuracy to second base, recording pop times of 2.09-2.25. His footwork is quick out of the crouch and his exchange is quick and clean. At the plate, Matheny displays quick hands and a level, line drive producing swing, attacking the gaps. As Matheny continues to fill out his frame, there is some potential for power in his swing.
