Cape Cod- Saw limited action with Oklahoma State this spring as a true freshman but has begun to come into his own this summer, showing development at the plate particularly over the last couple of weeks. He's a twitchy athlete with an offensive game built around speed (clocked multiple home-to-first times in the 4.08 to 4.17 range) and a short, quick line drive stroke that can catch up to good velocity. His approach is still raw, with Johnson too often expanding the zone, and there is a lot of head movement through load and swing launch, both of which have undoubtedly contributed to his 33% strikeout rate this summer. As he continues to log reps at the college ranks and builds a portfolio of at bats to draw from, he should be able to put the ball in play more regularly. He gets strong enough jumps to swipe bags and go first-to-third on the base paths and was solid in left field in my looks. As he improves his reads and routes he could eventually land in center where his ability to cover ground would be better put to use. Given the progress Johnson's made on the Cape, he will be a very interesting follow through fall practice and his draft-eligible sophomore year next spring.
An Oklahoma State commit that stands 5-foot-10, 165-pound with quick twitch actions. Offensively, the right-handed hitter shows elite quickness in his hands and surprising pop from his frame. Quick on the base paths, Johnson runs a 60 in the low 6.8s. Defensively, shows off some developing arm strength with accuracy.
