6/17/19

The lanky, high-waisted Baird (6-toot-3, 190-pounds) had a nice showing on the mound, with his fastball working 85-87, topping 88 mph. He works with an aggressive tempo, a compact and explosive drive, with short arm action in back and extended ¾ slot. The UTRGV commit spun an over-the-top curveball at 75-77 and spotted up his changeup at 71-74 mph.

1.19.19
The Texas-Rio Grande Valley commit was his usual self on the mound after spending the fall on the gridiron playing safety for the Eagles. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander pumped strikes with two solid pitches. His fastball was mostly 84-85 with arm side run and sink, while the devilish slider was 73-74 mph with 10/4 shape. Baird works from a ¾ slot with a compact arm stroke, high leg lift and drop-and-drive delivery.

8.5.18
Baird worked the quickest of all innings on Saturday (totalling maybe 3 minutes) and attacked the zone with real intent. After a quick first out, the right-hander got two punchouts, both on curveballs with 10/4 shape at 73 mph (72-76 in Game 1). You could call it more of a “slurve” but the pitch has depth and bite, and Team Arizona was not picking it up out of his hand. Baird has a deceptive delivery with a short compact arm stroke that slings from a high-¾ slot. His fastball jumps on hitters at 84-86 (85-88 in his first outing on Thursday). The rising junior also mixes in a 72-76 mph changeup. Fun fact, at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds, Baird also plays safety for the Salado High football team in the fall.

7.23.18
Baird has an athletic, long-limbed, projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds. The right-hander works from high-¾ slot with a compact arm stroke, and an up-tempo delivery that provides deception. The ball is tough to pick up out of his hand and provides for more effective velocity at 84-87 mph, creating occasional depth as he pounds the zone with feel for two pitches. His breaking ball has slurve-like 11/5 shape that ranged from 74-76 with tight rotation and good depth. The rising junior also plays safety for the Salado football team and ran a 6.8 60-yard dash at an earlier event this past summer.

6.11.18
Athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame with broad shoulders and a strong lower half.  Baird started his day off by running a strong 6.80 laser-timed 60. Baird threw his fastball from 85-86 with a short over-the-top arm action.  He was around the zone with his fastball, and his fastball had late life to it. He throws a 12/6 curveball at 75-76 mph with tight spin, and he has feel for this pitch.  His changeup was 72 mph.

The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, slightly open stance before he sits down into his lower half as he triggers his hands back, tipping the barrel toward the pitcher. Stride and glide lower half with a scoop path that created some carry to the pull side on balls down in the zone. Strong hands, quickish wrists and an aggressive backside to deliver the barrel with an exit velocity of 87 mph exit velo off the tee. In the outfield, Baird plays through the ball with long strides and good rhythm in his footwork, clean exchange into a quick, loose arm stroke with a top velocity of 87 mph.
