NorCal Underclass Trials: Top Shortstops

The inaugural Northern California Underclass Trials took place at Vacaville Christian HS (CA) on June 12th. There were over 80 players in attendance. As part of our coverage we will be rolling out top position players & pitchers before releasing our Top Overall Prospects from the event.

TOP SHORTSTOPS AT NORCAL UNDERCLASS TRIALS
Treven Crowley RHP / SS / Hilmar, CA / 2020
Arm strength is a tool that definitely stood out, both in the defensive workout (89 mph across the diamond) and on the mound (more on that in the post about pitchers). Some throws were a bit wild but some of that was just in his effort to show the raw arm strength. Backing off a bit he still has plenty of arm. Ran 7.13 and showed a lively left-handed swing during the batting practice round. Tools.
Tyler McCuistion SS / RHP / Rocklin , CA / 2021
Two-way prospect stood out as much as an infielder as he did as a pitcher. Good raw arm across the diamond up to 82 mph and plays the position athletically. 60 time was 7.26 and he has a chance to lower that in the coming years, but as is, he has the feet to play up the middle. Lean and wiry body type with potential to add mass, McCuistion showed a short stroke to the ball and already gives a hint at his power potential.
Tyler Shaw SS / 2B / Serra, CA / 2020
Shaw showed perhaps the best feel for playing the shortstop/infield position of all players at the trials. He has light and sure feet, he gets rid of the ball quickly and understands timing and pace of how to play. Not the strongest arm, but at 76 mph across the diamond he is certainly adequate and has a chance to develop more arm strength. Offensively he showed good hitting hands and contact ability with bat speed that is going to keep improving as he works and develops more strength.
Elijah Lee SS / C / Dublin , CA / 2021
Switch-hitting middle infielders who also have catching as part of their profile are good players to keep an eye on. Lee showed good all-around talent and with plenty of physical develop ahead of him, he is one to watch. He plays with a good motor and his enthusiasm stands out. With 79 mph arm strength across the diamond he already shows a loose and easy arm with throws that tracked well. Offensively Lee showed off a short swing on the left side though can continue to work on developing more bat speed as a left-handed hitter. On the right side, presumably his natural side, he displayed more bat speed and competitive stroke.
Gavin Napier SS / 2B / Granada, CA / 2020
A strong and athletic player, Napier plays a hard nosed style of ball and has a 'get it done' way about him. Offensively he has a gap to gap approach and has good barrel awareness and an aggressive finish through contact. Bat speed is there as is some present day strength. More of a pull oriented approach at this time. Defensively Napier showed 77 mph arm strength across the diamond but the arm plays up with his feel for getting rid of the ball. Showed an accurate arm with that quick release.
