OC Preseason All-State: Outfielders Analysis

PBR California Staff

Listen to the AT THE YARD PODCAST

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA. - The Road to the California State Games began at the second annual Orange County Preseason All-State held at JSerra High School. Players descended on St. Pierre Field to show their fall/winter progress in the leadup to the spring season just a few weeks away. The invitation only event drew over 200 requests which was narrowed down to the 80 participants selected.

Players were put through a customary pro-style workout that included a laser-time 60-yard sprint, a round of batting practice, a defensive workout that includes double-play turns for infielders, and concluded with bullpen sessions for pitchers. We purposely did not include games because we didn’t want to put pitchers who aren’t ready to face live hitters in that situation.

As we dive deeper into our notes and videos we will release more post-event content. Earlier we released our Quick Hits highlighting 20 early standouts, the Statistical Analysis, the catchers analysis, infielders analysis and now we'll take a look at the outfielders from the event.

Scouting Report

OC Preseason All-State. Tall build with some strength and room for more at 6-foot-2 190 pounds. Simple stroke at the plate with very few moving parts to the swing. Loads with a simple lift and plant to stride. Hands show some quickness to the ball and the extension was proportional to his body. Swing and approach show good contact ability and will serve him well with next level velocity. Hips could use more involvement in the overall swing and more lower half explosiveness is needed to develop power. Exit velocity of 82 mph was his personal best. Average fielder and his reads to the ball make him a serviceable outfield. Short arm swing plays up his release and he showed accuracy on his throws while topping at 79 mph on his personal best throw. Complementary outfield left-handed bat to a high school lineup with potential for more down the line with added power.

Scouting Report

OC Preseason All-State. Strong athletic football build at 6-foot-1 185 pounds. Displayed fluid running mechanics during his 7.49 60-yard dash. Left-handed hitter that likes the ball down in the zone. Keeps his back elbow tight to his body and dips his back shoulder showing some inside-out to his swing. Struggled with pitches higher up in the zone as it was harder for him to catch up. Showed some pop to left-center and the ability to cover both sides of the plate. Exit velocity of 84 mph was his personal best. Fielded well in the outfield and was quick to the ball with good hip rotation enabling him to aline himself quickly to the cutoff man. Hudl football clips shows his talent on the gridiron and his showcase showing shows there is current raw talent that could be harnessed down the line to make an impact at the next level.

Scouting Report

OC Preseason All-State. Athletic proportional build with room for more in his current 5-foot-11 170 pound frame. Possess natural speed with good running mechanics and showed that during the 60-yard dash when he clocked 6.92 seconds. Offensively loads with a full leg kick and body coil, dropping his hands in the process before planting and extending to his contact point. Lots of moving parts that rely heavily on timing and extension to make the swing work. Exit velocity of 82 mph was his personal best. Displayed soft hands with ease both in the outfield and infield while fielding. Mechanically the fielding mechanics are solid but took his time and was too slow to the ball. Topped at 87 mph from the outfield on his final throw to home and topped at 77 mph on his final throw from shortstop. Smooth utility player that shows some desirable skills and has the athleticism to make necessary adjustments in order to make the next step.

Scouting Report

OC Preseason All-State. This is our fourth look at Nicoletti in this type of setting. Nicoletti brings much of the same physical attributes and tools as noted in the previous reports, however his tools are improving at a steady rate. Posted a 6.87 60-yard dash, one of the quickest times on the day. Displayed the ability to square up the baseball consistently in his BP round using the whole field. Defensive round was crisp, with proper footwork, showing his ability to get to the ball efficiently, with a quick transfer and strong accurate throws often one hopping the glove.

Scouting Report

OC Preseason All-State. This is our first look at McAlister in this type of setting. Has large, proportional, athletic frame with long arms and legs. Clocked a good 60 time for his length and is a better runner underway. Setup is tall in the box with slightly open stance. Hands are positioned high and separated from body, allowing him to be short and drop the barrel to the down and in pitch which he was able to drive. Hand load is minimal to none. If McAlister made a small adjustment to get some momentum with his hands back on his load, we could see an uptick in power. Defensively he showed well in the outfield with proper fielding mechanics and footwork. Arm is a tic above average with carry. Arm slot is directly over-the-top and throws were online often one hopping the glove.
