Preseason Preview: Pittsburg Pirates

PBR California Staff

New Episode LIVE now! At The Yard Podcast

COVID ended the 2020 season early throughout the State but as things progress quickly for the 2021 high school season, it’s time for us to preview teams from around the State in the Yearly Preseason Preview. Schedules are being adapted to fit the ever-changing landscape and though this season may look different than history has shown us, coaches/staff, players, families, and our team are preparing for 2021 to be as successful as possible.

We’ve submitted the Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state and their responses have been flooding in. Over the next several weeks, we’ll be using their detailed insight on our team-by-team previews ahead of the 2021 season leading into the California Power 25 Rankings.

If you would like your team covered, please have your head coach email us.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Coach Cartagena is excited about the depth and experience coming back to his 2021 club as he returns 11 seniors this year, 9 returners from last year, and 5 pitchers. That depth and experience will be needed in an always competitive and deep Bay Valley Athletic League. In a year with only 20 games, teams in the BVAL will be slugging it out to see who brings home the crown with the Pirates expecting to be the last man standing. The team’s biggest strengths will be in overall defense, team speed, and baserunning ability that matches well with an experienced group. To meet their goals of the season, the Pirates will be counting on a young pitching staff and will need some of those young arms to become mainstays against the stiff competition. With the amount of depth and strengths this team has, the Pirates are looking for a bright 2021 season.
