ProCase 2019 - A Look Back at OF Petey Halpin

PBR Northern California Staff

PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase

The 2019 Northern CA ProCase was held 6/9/19 at Delta College in Stockton and it featured all but one of the local talents who are in the mix for the upper rounds of the 2020 draft. One such player, Petey Halpin, transferred from St. Francis HS to Mira Costa HS.

Of course MLB hasn't announced a draft date yet and we don't know the exact number of rounds, which could be five at a minimum.

We've begun to build the roster for the 2020 ProCase, where the players will again be put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE from 2019, as well as competitive at-bats/game-type action.

If the event cannot be held at Folsom Lake College due to Covid-19 precautions we have a contingency plan to hold it at Islanders Field in Lathrop. We have NOT adjusted the date at this time and are constantly surveying potential necessary changes. We do have alternative future dates/location set.

Click on the highlighted player name which is linked to his profile with more video and notes, etc.

A LOOK BACK AT...

OF Petey Halpin (Mira Costa) - Report from 6/9/19

2020 OF Petey Halpin (Texas commit), listed at 6-foot-0, 180-pounds, showing a high waist and athletic build with some width in the chest and lean muscle build. The frame is strong with some first-step quickness allowing his legs to get moving and showing the makeup speed to track balls in the OF. Halpin showed a loud bat, strong arm and that athletic ability to go get the ball in the OF during the Northern California ProCase while also showing a loose, no-pressure personality on the field enjoying being around some friends and players he's been around.

The bat showed up as he made adjustments to his timing, finishing his final two rounds showing the quick bat and power to the middle of the field. Standing balanced with relaxed elbows and even hands, Halpin loads over the back hip as the hands pull back early with some scap load of the back shoulder. It's a controlled forward stride with the hips sequencing the swing showing some late bat whip as he hits over a firm front side. When the barrel is on time he showed the ability to drive the ball with carry to the pull side gap flashing some pop that way as well (93 EV). The adjustments he made in BP carried over as he picked up two hits driving a single to CF before utilizing his speed to beat out a ball in the 6-hole (4.15 H-1st) getting out of the box quickly.

During defensive workouts he showed his athletic actions with quick feet working to stay behind the baseball and staying in rhythm. The arm is compact putting life on throws online to both bags; showed a quick release letting his legs work on the load before putting throws on the money to the bases (91 MPH). Having seen Halpin during the last two spring seasons he's got the ability to track the ball well in CF ranging to the gaps and able to come get balls in front of him. That easy-going personality allows him to turn up the competitive nature when it's game time and should fit in nicely at either UCLA or with a MLB team after the Draft come next June.
