ProCase 2019 - A Look Back at RHP Treven Crowley

PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase

The 2019 Northern CA ProCase was held last June 9th at Delta College in Stockton and it featured all but one of the local talents who are in the mix for the upper rounds of the 2020 draft. Of course MLB hasn't announced a draft date yet and we don't know the number of rounds, which could be five at a minimum.

We've begun to build the roster for the 2020 ProCase, where the players will again be put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE from 2019, as well as competitive at-bats/game-type action.

If the event cannot be held at Folsom Lake College due to Covid-19 precautions we have a contingency plan to hold it at Islanders Field in Lathrop. We have NOT adjusted the date at this time and are constantly surveying potential necessary changes. We do have alternative future dates/location set.

A LOOK BACK AT...

RHP Treven Crowley (Hilmar HS) - report from 6/9/19

2020 RHP Treven Crowley (Fresno State commit) listed at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds, with a sinewy and lean body type and twitchy actions. He's a high level high school athlete and legitimate 2-way baseball player at the HS level (SS, L/R), not to mention the former starting QB on his section winning high school team. Crowley will give up his time on the gridiron this fall to focus on baseball exclusively going forward.

Crowley has a calm, disciplined delivery, with a pretty short knee lift, though it appears to have gotten a bit closer to waist level recently, which gives him a bit more time over the rubber. He breaks with a quick separation out of the glove and makes a quick shallow circle on the backside. The word 'quick' frequently comes up when describing Crowley on the mound. He gets to a high-3/4 slot, works down the slope with on-line direction, and plants with good stability. As a high level athlete, he's really just scratching the surface of what can come out of his body. With continued strength gains in the coming years his stuff will continue to spike.

The fastball comes out up to 92 mph and he comfortably sits in the 88-90 mph range, with late life and some riding action. When getting to his best extension there is also good down life with the fastball and he's capable of throwing a late sinker. Complementing the fastball is a real quick biting curveball (71-73 mph). Again, when he gets to that good extension it's a swing and miss pitch and also capable of locking up hitters when thrown on the arm side/at front hip of right-handed hitters. When Crowley is calm and not throwing for the radar gun his stuff plays plenty well and allows him to keep the extra gear in his back pocket when needed.

As a position player he has merits that would have drawn recruiting interest, though not likely at the major D1 level. In any case, he's a left-handed hitter with a spray approach mentality and good hands. He plays up the middle with athleticism and of course the plus arm plays across the diamond. Given his all-around athletic background, as a position player and as a quarterback, he transfers so many good intangibles to the mound. Crowley's size may limit some of his ceiling but given that his body works so easily and he's a well-rounded athlete, he likely will get to the mid-90s at some point (that happened in the early stages of the 2020 season, getting to 94) with a plus breaking ball and change-up that is a usable third pitch.
