ProCase 2019 - A Look Back at SS Tommy Troy

PBR Northern CA Scouting Staff

PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase

The 2019 Northern CA ProCase was held last June 9th at Delta College in Stockton and it featured all but one of the local talents who are in the mix for the upper rounds of the 2020 draft. The MLB draft will be June 10th and include only five rounds.

We've been building the roster for the 2020 ProCase, where the players will again be put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE from 2019, as well as competitive at-bats/sim-game-type action. We will be ready to roll out our new tech partners, TrackMan, Blast Motion, Driveline, and Vizual Edge.

In the likelihood the event cannot be held at Folsom Lake College due to Covid-19 precautions on that campus we have a contingency plan to hold it at Islanders Field in Lathrop on the same date. We also have alternative dates secured later in the summer. We have NOT adjusted the date at this time and are constantly surveying potential necessary changes.

A LOOK BACK AT...

SS Tommy Troy (Los Gatos) - report from 6/9/19

2020 SS Tommy Troy (Stanford Commit) is listed at 5-foot-10, 185-pounds with a compact, strong frame that is extremely athletic and well built helping him play to his strengths. The speed is real (6.72 60 yd) and his ability to explode from stationary with loose athletic hips and twitched up actions have helped him continue to improve his overall game. After seeing him in the spring over the past two seasons in the Central Coast Section, along with playing in high level events over the summer, Troy continues to stand out with the hit, glove and speed tools all flashing above average or better.

Troy came out at the NorCal ProCase making a statement with the fastest 60 at the event before lowering his time with his second run showing off double-plus straight line speed that he takes and utilizes with his defense and on the base paths. During the Scout Game portion of the day he showed that he's got the base running instincts as well stealing second and third against one of the top catchers in Northern California, with an errand throw at third base allowing him to walk in for a run.

His defense has continued to improve as he's put in a lot of work showing he's got the range and arm strength to stick at the 6-spot at the next level. The footwork has been the most significant improvement where he's improved his ability to control his movements in short spaces showing the speed and range to cover deep into both holes taking great angles to the baseball while keeping his hips low. By beating balls to spots, it allows the glove to be soft and work through the baseball both in the backhand and forehand work. Add in a strong arm (91 MPH) that can make throws from different angles and a quick release on turns, and you've got a complete defensive shortstop.

Hitting from a slightly crouched stance with even hands and flared elbows, Troy sways into his back hip as the hands pull the knob down and towards the catcher putting himself into a consistently strong hitting position. He shows the ability to drive his hips as he keeps his eyes behind the compact upward moving barrel showing his strength in his hands and wrist with late bat speed that damages baseballs (95 EV). During BP he regularly peppered deep into the gaps before creating more leverage and driving the baseball out of the ballpark gap to pullside. During the season I've seen him be a spark plug atop the order using his bat-to-ball skills, ability to do damage, and elite base running  as an offensive weapon early in the game.

Troy played with a calm demeanor and positive confident approach allowing the skills to come out. Stanford commits are usually hard to get out of their commitment, but MLB teams should be putting in the time to make sure they see Troy as he's got a chance to be a special player.
