SoCal Player of the Week: Matt Swartz

Les Lukach
State Scouting Director

2019 LHP/OF Matt Swartz of Edison HS (Huntington Beach, CA) has been named this week's Prep Baseball Report SoCal Player of the Week thanks to his outstanding performance on the mound and at the plate for the Chargers last week.

After a bit of a rough start Edison has won 7-of-9 games as they’ve jumped into fourth place in the always tough Sunset League and Swartz’s contributions have been a big reason for the resurgence. He’s committed himself to baseball now and is beginning to show the traits of collegiate player that recruiters covet.

Swartz, a two-sport athlete at Edison, contributed in a major way last week as the Chargers took two games from Newport Harbor. The junior southpaw got a win by throwing five innings, striking out three, walking none, and allowing two earned runs. He was also 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored on the week. For the season Swartz is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 22 innings pitched with 17 strikeouts and 7 walks. He’s also hitting .350 with three doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBI for the Chargers.

The Chargers will face off with third place Fountain Valley for two games this week which will go a long way in determining the leagues automatic playoff berth. For his efforts, Swartz has been named the Prep Baseball Report SoCal Player of the Week for the week of April 13 - April 29.

The Prep Baseball Report salutes Swartz’s hard work and success.
