SoCal ProCase Spotlight: OF Gabe D'Arcy

FULLERTON, CALIF. - One of the few uncommitted players in attendance at the SoCal ProCase, Gabe D’Arcy of JSerra HS soon committed to Arkansas after the event. At first glance it’s easy to see why D’Arcy should fit into the uber-competitive SEC should he pursue that option after the 2021 season.

D’Arcy has all the physical tools and athleticism that are sought in high level players. At 6-foot-3, 210-pounds can seemingly do it all on the field. Having proved himself not only in the Trinity League but in elite national level competitions, D’Arcy will have ample opportunity to continue to show scouts why he is one of the top outfielders in his class in state. 

With 67 representatives from 22 MLB Organizations in attendance, some teams 2-3 deep, and the talent on the SoCal ProCase roster, D’Arcy set out to show that his overall ranking in the state of California is for real and worthy of MLB scouting interest heading into the 2021 draft.

THE REPORT:

Body: 6-foot-3, 210-pounds. Long and strong with proportional musculature throughout the frame. Durable frame with room for the addition of mass. 

Hit: Gets and keeps the barrel on plane through the zone consistently through to extension. His on-plane efficiency of 82° rates well above average for college hitters and is consistent with MLB averages as scored by Blast Motion. He’s direct and quick to the ball showing consistent barrel control. 

Power: Raw power is consistent with MLB average with an average bat speed of 71.3 mph per Blast Motion. His average power score of 16.9g is above average for college players and right at the MLB average of 17g. Moves the bat quickly through the zone generating loud, powerful contact. 

Field: A 6.64 runner, D’Arcy is able to cover lots of ground in the outfield while easily tracking balls to both sides. Footwork is quick, smooth and consistent while playing under control of his body. Glides towards the ball and comes up ready to throw. 

Arm: Outfield velocity 85 mph with throws flashing carry. This is an area where he’s really improved with his accuracy as his throws were more inline with the target than in past viewings. 

Run: Clocked a 6.64 laser-timed 60-yard dash on a grass surface. Showed good running mechanics keeping shoulder square with little-to-no head movement. 

Summary: D’Arcy, a longtime starter at JSerra in the Trinity League, certainly possesses the tools that will undoubtedly make him a target of pro scouts leading into the 2021 MLB Draft. There are some questions about his consistency at the plate - swing can get long on him at times - but there’s no arguing his current and projectable abilities. He’s a laid back, ho hum, type guy who is an excellent clubhouse guy. Those things can’t be undersold at the next level. D’Arcy will have plenty of time to answer the questions scouts have as it pertains to his consistency at the plate, and if he answers those in his customary no-doubt way, then D’Arcy is going to have a decision to make come next July.
