South Bay Week in Review

SOUTH BAY LOS ANGELES, CA. - Prep baseball last week in the South Bay was dominated by pitching.

The week really got going with Jake Thau of Redondo Union HS, and a University of Kansas signee. The righty went out on Thursday and threw a complete game 2 hitter recording 9 strikeouts.  He was at times at dominant, flashing the form that made him a highly sought after recruit 18 months ago.

His counterpart, uncommitted senior Quin Kirsten of El Segundo HS did his best job matching Thau pitch-for-pitch.  He surrendered 1 run and finished with three strikeouts. Despite the loss he went toe-to-toe with a future Division I collegiate player showing plenty of moxie of his own in the outing.

The last pitcher I got eyes on that really stood out was uncommitted 2021 Ryan Anderson from Palos Verdes HS. All he did was throw 4 innings giving up 1 hit and striking out four hitters.  He separated himself as a player to watch in the South Bay for the next few years with his stuff and ability to continuously spot his pitches.

There were several other players that left an impression. Let’s take a close look at some standouts.

Video and notes on 17 players, including a rising 2021 pitcher, an upcoming big bat in the 2020 class, along with several college level uncommitted 2019's are available in this report for subscribers. College program and you don't have a subscription? Now seems like a good time to get one.

TOP PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK

2019 RHP Jake Thau (University of Kansas signee) was masterful on Thursday night, he threw a complete game two hitter with 9 strikeouts.  He was clicking on all cylinders, commanding all of his pitches. His fastball was live all night, as he was getting swing and misses and throwing strikes up in the zone.  His slider was on-point getting players to fish and painting the black. The two hits he surrendered came from hitters that hit the ball to the opposite field. Even when hitters made contact they were routinely late.  The last game I saw Thau was against Aliso Niguel HS where gave up 5 runs and the hitters squared up a number of balls. It appears as though Thau made an adjust and is starting to dominate when he takes the bump.
