THE FIVE: N. Calif '20's to Follow This Fall
September 16, 2019
N. CALIFORNIA - The calendar will officially turn to fall this coming weekend and that means the all-important fall baseball season is upon us. Colleges programs will begin preparations for the 2020 season but also keep an eye on uncommitted seniors who can complete their recruiting classes.
Northern California doesn't have the scout ball organization/structure that is prevalent in SoCal, but there are lots of tournaments that take place and there are some club organizations that play pseudo-scout ball games vs JC programs and other competition. Of course Arizona will also be a popular place during October for uncommitted players.
The last day of the contact period for NCAA D1 coaches to scout is October 13th, which is less than a month away. We have a couple of uncommitted senior events coming up, in both Northern and Southern California, which has us looking at who are some of the top uncommitted players to keep an eye on this fall.
Drew Lombardi OF / 3B / Cardinal Newman, CA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 160 / POS: 31
We've highlighted Lombardi previously and as one of the highest ranked uncommitted seniors he should be kept in the minds of recruiters. An athletically put together player, he also plays the game with a high level of athleticism. Lombardi (R/R) possesses plus speed, a good arm and an all-field approach at the plate. Lombardi can impact the game a number of ways as an offensive player, with gap power and speed that turns doubles into triples and also good drag bunt skills. |
Jeriah Lewis SS / OF / Encinal, CA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 195 / POS: 40
A participant at the Northern California ProCase last June, Lewis is one of the more intriguing uncommitted players in the region. The raw bat speed and offensive potential is pretty clear, yet he also has some things to polish up as an offensive player. Defensively he will likely play SS as a senior but beyond college he very well could be moved to 2B or CF/LF. He may get a D1 opportunity out of HS but a couple of seasons at strong JC program could be incredibly beneficial for Lewis. |
Luke Keaschall SS / 2B / Aptos, CA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 199 / POS: 41
Another player we've highlighted previously, Keaschall stays on our radar because he is one of the top uncommitted SS in the state. The term 'ballplayer' has a certain connotation and Keaschall embodies that definition. However, he's also an above average athlete and has the tools to continue to blossom as a prospect. His defensive and offensive talents and tools all rate well for the D1 level and as time goes by Keaschall will surpass many players who were more highly regarded. |
Matty Fung SS / 2B / Serra, CA / 2020Fung is one a few talented uncommitted players at Serra. A left-handed hitter with good wheels, Fung has a slashing, all-field hitting approach and speed that can stress the defense. He has good contact skills and his approach makes him a top of the order type hitter. Defensively he's got the chops to play either middle INF spot, with a release that makes SS possible. Good player with some twitchy tools to impact the game, and an IQ bred from being the son of a long time HS coach. |
Logan Azem OF / Serra , CA / 2020Another of the talented uncommitted players at Serra, Azem has repeatedly shown our scouting staff a useful set of baseball tools and skill. He's a left-handed hitter and possesses both the speed and a bit of sneaky pop to impact the game. A HIGH energy player, Azem is generally filthy from head to toe by the 3rd inning. He is the type of talented and passionate player who thrives in college baseball, not only because he can play, but it appears as though the game is what he also breathes. |
