Uncommitted Spotlight: 2019 MIF Brady Hormel

Les Lukach
State Scouting Director

2019 middle infielder Brady Hormel of Buchanan HS (Clovis, CA) shows the traits of a big time college baseball recruit and has begun to garner plenty of attention of college coaches because of his play on the diamond.

The No. 75th ranked player in the Prep Baseball Report California Top 100 Class of 2019 rankings, Hormel is a nimble footed middle infielder with a big time arm that projects to stay at shortstop on the collegiate level. The first thing that stands when you see Hormel is the strength that he possesses throughout his body. That strength really comes to light when Hormel steps into the box where he takes an aggressive, yet refined, approach. He shows good discipline when attacking pitches through a clear understanding of his hitting zone.

Defensively Hormel is a highlight waiting to happen thanks in part to his arm strength. In one game I saw he threw out a runner at the plate by two steps from shallow left field on a relay. The throw was on the plate and had plenty of carry. His pre-pitch routine is repeatable and he routinely anticipates where the ball is going to be hit off the bat. Hormel is quicker than he is fast, but his footwork at shortstop provides him with very good range to both sides.
