Las Vegas, NV - The West Coast Games at UNLV/CSN this past weekend concluded the summer season for PBR California as a team of selected uncommitted ‘23s and ‘24s got a chance to showcase their skills in a workout day and three games against other PBR states. Team California brought a roster of 18 players but six of those players stood out amongst the rest. Below are quick scouting notes and video on the six standouts from the three games.
STANDOUTS
'24 OF/RHP Finnegan Stewart - Orange Lutheran
Stewart had the best overall ABs for Team California on the weekend. There wasn’t a single AB of his that wasn't competitive and he ended up going 4-6 on the weekend with 3BBs. He barreled every one of those 4 hits against quality arms. He has strong hands that generate easy bat speed. He demonstrated his advanced bat speed (77mph avg.) and barrel accuracy both in-game and during the workout day where in his BP round he put up another 100+ max exit velo and another 91+ average exit velo. He uses a simple toe-tap trigger that gets him consistently on time and the swing is balanced and works on a slight upward path. What was also standout was his ability to find barrel when out front or late showing how well his bat stays through the zone. He also looked solid during his defensive play highlighted by an outfield assist to gun down a runner at the plate during the night game against Nevada. Then he jumped on the mound to close out our final game against Idaho where he was 82-84 T85 with his FB that came out pretty easy. Stewart might have been the most surprise ‘24 we saw this summer.
'23 UTL Shane Bailey - Christian HS
Bailey had himself a solid weekend at the plate going a 4-8 with 2 doubles. The swing is not a finished product as there is still some present drift and head movement that makes him somewhat susceptible to spin/offspeed but the natural hitting ability combined with some of the advanced hitting data metrics show there is a lot of raw upside with the bat. Noticeable metrics include his 98max/93avg exit velos and 74mph average bat speed that he displayed during his workout day. His bat works on a flat path through the zone (78% on-plane efficiency) and has good extension through which allows him to catch barrels even when out front. There were also times he showed good adjustability and inside-out ability on inside FBs. He also got on the mound for two innings of work where he didn’t have his best stuff but was 82-84 T85 with his FB and showed developing CB. Bailey hasn't stopped performing since his breakout HS season and should be a top '23 follow into the fall.
'23 1B Jarrett Segura - Alemany HS
This was Segura’s second West Coast Games appearance and he continued last year’s solid performance into this year where he finished a solid 4-8 at the plate. Segura is an aggressive hitter that has a knack for pounding first-pitch FBs. There is a natural rhythm to his swing that helps him be consistently on time. The bat works on a direct path through the zone with above average bat speed while staying connected throughout and turning tight (17gs avg. rotational acceleration). Besides the bat Segura is also an above average defensive 1B and was a leader throughout the weekend. Segura has been a standout player whenever he's in front of us and we believe he is one of the more consistent '23 bats left on the uncommitted market.
'24 RHP Kannon Sharpe - Enochs HS
Sharpe was the only pitcher for Team California to throw three shutout innings. The 6-0/180lb RHP worked fast, pounded the zone, and opposing hitters never got in a rhythm. He attacked east/west with his mix and didn’t leave much middle throughout his outing. He held 84-86 T87 with the FB through his 3 innings but his breaking ball was his most intriguing pitch. His 70-73 CB showed above-average spin (2681rpm avg.) and a quality movement profile where it averaged 11 inches of IVM and 14 inches of IHM combining that with above average feel in zone (60% zone). The delivery is athletic and the arm is quick which leads us to believe there is still some room for continued growth with his stuff. With his solid performances at BAWS and West Coast Games we are excited to continue to watch him throw and develop into the next HS season.
'23 LHP Adam Arther - Polytechnic HS
This is the second time we’ve seen Arther in game action and we have came away impressed after each look. The funky LHP got through three innings giving up 1R against Team Idaho. He has some unique delivery movements that are hard to time up while also stepping into the LHHs batters box and crossfiring from a side arm slot giving him quite the added deception. His FB velocity was a little sporadic where it ranged 80-84 T85 with plenty of horizontal run to it (Up to 25inch IHM). Then he mixed in a 72-77 CH that held that horizontal run but added some downward action to it. When he is attacking the zone it’s rare to find a clean barrel off of him. If he can continue to learn how to repeat his unique delivery we believe the command will improve and with his current 6'3 165lb lean/projectable frame there is still room to believe a velo jump is possible.
'23 RHP Owen Faith - Rocklin HS
Faith showed solid stuff in his three innings of work where he struck out four and gave up 2ER. He gave up some barrels in his first inning of work but really settled in his 2nd and 3rd inning. It’s an athletic delivery with a body that works more on a north/south plane of rotation and an arm that releases to an over the top slot. His 82-84 T85 FB flashed good upside from a movement profile standpoint where it showed above average induced vertical break where it induced whiffs especially when up in the zone. He also mixed in a 73-76 CH that showed decent fade, deception and effectiveness against LH bats. Faith had quite the summer on the mound and because of that he should find himself on more radars headed into the fall.
