Over the course of the next week, PBR Colorado will break down the Preseason All-State event by position.  We began our look with the catchers and outfielderscorners, today we look at the middles.

Preseason All-State Pitcher Analysis

Carson Brown RHP / OF / Rock Canyon, CO / 2020

A 5-foot-11, 160-pound right hand pitcher who went from the stretch only in this early season event. We have seen him from the full several times. Stays balanced through a repeatable delivery and hand separation. Stays on the backside and uses lower half to get downhill. Stay square with a smooth finish. High ¾ arm slot. Fastball topped out at 86 MPH, mixed in sharp Curve 65-68 mph and finished with a 70-73 mph Change with near fastball arm speed.

 

 

 

Christian Carew 1B / RHP / Chaparral, CO / 2020

A 6-foot-6, 200-pound right handed pitcher who Stands tall and closes the distance to the plate on his delivery with a long reach. Has a slow repeatable delivery, uses the lower half generate power when making a pitch. Shows Fastball command which topped out at 82 MPH. Showed a Curve with some depth at 65-66 MPH, and a feel for a Change 68-70 MPH. Presence at the plate with a square set up and a slow load. Swing is slightly uphill and shows pull side power.

 

 

 

Dorsey Chatham RHP / 3B / Boulder, CO / 2020

A solid 6-foot-3, 205-pound right hand pitcher who is mechanically sound on the mound with a drop and drive motion. Gets to the good balance point and smooth hand separation before getting downhill. Fastball has a good downward angle at 87 MPH. Curve is an effective pitch with 11/5 shape at 74-75 MPH. Has feel for the Change at 81-82 MPH. The 2020 RHP has a projectable frame to increase numbers in the future.

 

 

 

Benjamin Cole LHP / 1B / Mountain Vista, CO / 2020

A 6-foot-2, 230-pound crafty left hand pitcher who works with a repeatable motion and proper mechanics. Arm speed stays consistent on all pitches and he has the ability to work the ball around the zone. Fastball was 80 mph with late movement in the zone. Curveball has tight spin and flashed 1/7 break late in the zone. He finished with a 70-71 mph Change with fastball arm speed making it tough to pick up.  A great out pitch.

 

 

 

Ryan Collins LHP / 1B / Broomfield, CO / 2020

A 6-foot-8, 180-pound left hand pitcher with plenty of frame to work with. Does a good job of staying in balance and timing with his tall frame. From balance he falls to the plate with a high 3/4 arm slot. Finish falls off to the third base side after delivery. Fastball was 78 MPH with command away in the zone.  Curve had sweeping break and down to the right hand hitter and sat at 68-69 MPH. Change was 71-72 MPH with sink.

 

 

 

Max Fairchild OF / LHP / Thunderridge, CO / 2020

A 5-foot-9, 160-pound left hand pitcher who uses a simple balanced windup on the mound. From balance he falls to the plate staying in line with good extension out front. Arm comes over the top and maintains good speed on all pitches. Fastball was 78 MPH with straight life. Curve sat 65-67 MPH with sweeping break and his Change was 70-72 MPH with good down movement. Simple set up at the plate.  Square with a short stride and slow load back. Stays on the back side through the swing with an uphill path to the ball. Displayed good gap to gap control and power.

 

 

 

Bradley Feeder RHP / OF / Legend High School, CO / 2019

A 5-foot-10, 170-pound right hand pitcher who has good presence and tempo with a repeatable delivery. Gets to the good balance point and smooth hand separation before getting downhill. Drives hard to the plate and stays square on his finish. Fastball has a good downward angle at 81 MPH. Curve is an effective pitch when the arm doesn’t slow down at 59-62 MPH. Has feel for the Change at 68-70 MPH.

 

 

 

Brian Gartrell RHP / Colorado Early Colleges Parker (plays at Chaparral HS), CO / 2019

A 5-foot-11, 170-pound right hand pitcher who stand tall on the mound with a high leg kick and drop and drive motion.  Max effort on delivery with arm re-coil after the pitch.  Landing is in-line with some fall to the first base side. Arm is loose and over the top and Fastball was 82 MPH. Curve flashed tight spin and 11/5 shape at 71-72 MPH. Change sat 73-74 MPH with sink.

 

 

 

Grayson Gifford RHP / OF / Denver South, CO / 2020

A 6-foot-3, 165-pound right hand pitcher who has a repeatable delivery with good tempo. Gets downhill and on a plane with smooth hand separation. From the stretch, will set up from a wide base. Has command of the Fastball was 84 MPH with run and Curve sat 71-72 MPH with a sharp 11/5 break down in the zone.  Feel for a Change at 76-79 MPH. Projectable player to follow.

 

 

 

 

Alex Gonzales OF / RHP / Lakewood High School, CO / 2020

A 5-foot-11, 155-pound right hand pitcher who stays balanced through a repeatable delivery and hand separation. Stays on the backside and uses lower half to get downhill. Lands in-line with the plate and stays square on his finish. High ¾ arm slot. Fastball was 78 MPH, mixed in sharp Curve 60-64 and a Change at 69-70 MPH. At the plate hits from a open crouched stance. Long stride and slow load back with hands on the pitch. Hands create whip through the zone and he showed good control to all fields.

 

 

 

Carter Johnson RHP / Mountain Vista , CO / 2020

A 6-foot-4, 175-pound right hand pitcher who has a smooth balanced repeatable delivery. High leg lift, smooth hand separation when working towards the plate. High short ¾ arm slot. Topped with the Fastball at 82 MPH and mixed in a Curve at 63-64 MPH and feel for a Change at 73-74 MPH.

 

 

 

Liam Leece 3B / RHP / Legend, CO / 2020

A 6-foot, 175-pound right hand pitcher who stand tall on the mound with a slight pause at the balance point. Hands separate early and arm is short and over the top. Fastball showed good late run and was 81 MPH. Curve had tight spin and 11/5 shape and sat 69-71 MPH. His change was delivered at near fastball arm speed with late sink at 71-73 MPH.

 

 

 

Evan Magill RHP / Mountain Vista, CO / 2021

A 6-foot-1, 200-pound projectable right hand pitcher who has a repeatable delivery and mechanics, smooth transition to the balance point with good hand separation. Finishes balanced and downhill. Strong lower half with good drive to the plate. Throws from a ¾ arm slot, Fastball topped out at 88 MPH with some sink and arm side run on the 2 Seam. The Curve 72-73 MPH is an above average pitch and has feel for a Change 72-74 MPH with some sink.

 

 

 

Liam McAndrew RHP / OF / Boulder , CO / 2020

A 6-foot-3, 180-pound right hand pitcher who stand tall on the mound with a high leg kick and he rocks back before delivery. Arm wraps behind and comes through at a high 3/4 slot. Fastball was 78 MPH with control in the zone. Curve had sweeping 11/5 shape and was 65-66 MPH.  His change was his best secondary pitch and sat 70-71MPH.

 

 

 

Blake Rarog C / SS / Legend, CO / 2020

A 5-foot-9, 180-pound all-around projectable player who pitches from the right side. Repeatable motion that is quick and compact to the plate. Arm is short out of the glove and he delivers from a high 3/4 slot. Fastball has good arm side run and was 82 MPH. Curve flashed tight spin and 11/5 shape at 65-66 MPH. Change was delivered with near fastball arm speed with feel as 71-72 MPH. At the plate he hits from a narrow open stance with a high leg kick on the pitch. Lower half fires through the zone and swing is uphill with pull side power.

 

 

 

Tyler Richardson LHP / OF / Elizabeth , CO / 2019

A 6-foot-2, 170-pound left hand pitcher to follow who has a repeatable delivery from a ¾ arm slot. Slight turn from the front hip with good hand separation. Stays balanced throughout the pitch and finishes in a good fielding position. Has command of a Fastball at 85 MPH with some arm side run. The Curve was 71-72 MPH with sharp break and Change sat 73-74 MPH are two secondary pitches around the zone that will get outs.

 

 

 

Derek Shaver 3B / RHP / Grand Junction, CO / 2019

A 6-foot-4, 205-pound solid right hand pitching prospect who has a max effort delivery with good balance on the back side, creates shoulder tilt and drives down the mound. Has a high ¾ arm slot, finishes downhill with intent. The Fastball peaked at 87 MPH, Curve was 73-75 MPH was sharp spin down in the zone and Change was 76-77 MPH was above average with some sink. The 2019 RHP has a projectable frame and mechanics to increase his numbers going forward.

 

 

 

Izaak Siefken RHP / SS / Holy Family, CO / 2021

5-foot-10, 160-pound right hand projectable pitcher who starts off on the middle of the rubber and will slide to the 1B side. Gets downhill and on a plane with smooth hand separation. From the stretch, will set up from a wide base. Has command of the Fastball at 86 MPH and Curve that sat 68-70 MPH with a sharp 11/5 break down in the zone.  Feel for a Change that was 75-77 MPH. The 2021 graduate has a lot in the tank with an athletic frame that will only get better on the mound.

 

 

 

Spye Turnbeaugh RHP / 1B / Arapahoe , CO / 2020

A 6-foot-7, 200-pound right hand pitcher with presence on the mound who has a smooth polished delivery. Stands tall and falls to the plate after balance. Arm is long and loose and delivery is over the top. Arm speed stays consistent on all pitches. Fastball was 81 MPH with late run. Curve topped out at 69 MPH with sharp 11/5 action. Change sat 69-70 MPH with late sink in the zone. Tall at the plate with an uphill swing path. Lift and place stride and small hand load. Showed gap to gap power and finishes high and on his front side.

 

 

 

Colton Widler 3B / RHP / University High School, CO / 2019

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound right hand pitcher who has a slow deliberate motion to the plate. Uses a high leg kick for balance and a slight rock to the back side. Arm is long and over the top. Maintains good arm speed on all pitches. Arm is from an over the top and drops to a high 3/4 slot on some pitches. Fastball was 78 MPH with straight life. Curve was 70-71 MPH with sweeping 11/5 break. Change was 61-62 MPH.

 

 

 

Julian Zamora RHP / OF / Boulder , CO / 2020

A 6-foot-2, 170-pound right hand pitcher who has a smooth balanced repeatable delivery. High leg lift, smooth hand separation when working towards the plate. High ¾ arm slot. Loose arm with good extension out front on the relase. Topped with the Fastball at 83 MPH and mixed in a Curve at 68-71 MPH with 11/5 shape and feel for a Change that sat 72-73 MPH. He also added a 76-77 split with good down movement.
