Fall Upperclass Games Analysis: Infielders

On Nov. 10, the PBR Georgia scouting staff hosted its final upperclass event of 2019, the Fall Upperclass Games at Piedmont College. The event featured nearly 80 uncommitted prospects from the 2020 and 2021 classes. These prospects participated in a pro-style workout before competing in a simulated game against live pitching.
Last month, we shared our rapid analysis of this event inside out Quick Hits post, and took a statistical look at the day's top performers inside our Stats Story. We began our position-by-position analysis with catchers and outfielders. Today, we move along to a group of 33 infielders, many of whom also were standout prospects on the mound.

Glenn Green 3B / RHP / Sandy Creek, GA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 26 / POS: 1
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting two-way prospect, strong, athletic build, lanky frame, will add additional strength as he continues to physically mature, projectable. Ran a 7.19 laser-timed 60. On the mound, arm works long with a full arm swing to a high ¾ slot, quick arm speed as he accelerates out front, repeats well. Low effort in drop and drive delivery, stays on-line, lands square, finishes crossing over with some recoil. Fastball touched 91, sat mostly 87-90 with running action. Slider, tight spin, two plane break to it, present swing and miss type pitch, 75-79, threw some that were absolutely devastating, dropping out of the zone and leaving hitters with little-to-no shot at touching. Also offered up a curveball as his third pitch, 68-71. Offensively, open setup, short drop of the hands on load, leg kick timing trigger, good balance throughout, uses strong lower half well. Gap-to-gap type hitter, creates leverage, gains extension through the zone with an uphill barreal path, looks to elevate the ball and drive it with force, easy bat speed, 86 exit velocity off a tee, has a swagger about him. Went 2-for-3 in-game with a double that he crushed over the center fielders head. Defensively, similarly to how he pitches, the arm works long with quick arm speed, considerable amount of upper body strength in play, accurate with carry, 88 across the infield. Showed good body control in the field, handles his position athletically, soft glove hand, clean and fluid actions. A high follow prospect in the 2021 class. |
Nathan Williams RHP / 1B / North Cobb, GA / 20206-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed hitting two-way prospect, large frame, projects to add additional strength to already strong build. On the mound, arm action is short to a high ¾ slot, late break of hands, accelerates quickly, repeats and hides the ball well. Drop and drive delivery, turns body towards second, works on-line, lands square, finishes square to home. Fastball sat 82-85 with occasional cut, feel for. Curveball, 12/6 shape, depth to it, showed some bite, 70-72. Changeup, fade action, maintains arm speed, 74-75. Face four batters, allowed one hit and struck out two. Offensively, balanced setup, reverse toe-tap stride, big load as hands drop then head back, balanced at contact. Takes a power approach, when on-time gains extension through the zone and can drive the ball middle/pull, 89 exit velocity off a tee. Ran a 7.53 laser-timed 60. Defensively, short, quick arm action at first base, gets rid of the ball quickly, 86 across the infield. Good feel around the bag, plays through the ball with fluid and clean actions. |
Christian Harmon SS / RHP / Norcross, GA / 20215-foot-11, 168-pound right-handed hitting shortstop and right-handed pitcher, strong, athletic build, projects to continue to add strength to all areas of frame. On the mound, arm works clean and loose to a high ¾ slot, accelerates quickly, shows good balance and little effort. Tall and fall delivery, strides towards the third base side of the rubber, lands square, finishes upright. Fastball, sat 84-85, touched 86 with running action, creates good angle and aggressively pulls down on the pitch. Curveball, tight spin as he throws the pitch with fastball arm speed, creates short, late 12/6 break, 77-80. Changeup, heavy sink when located low in the zone, 77-78. Offensively, open setup, short stride, short hand load back, stays balanced through contact. Barrel works on a level plane through the zone creating line drive contact, uses the entire field, consistent in his approach, has an idea at the plate, 81 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, arm works short and loose from slots ranging from low ¾ to high ¾, is accurate across the infield at 83. Plays through the ball with competent hands, fluid with his footwork and clean on exchanges, showed good body control when making plays on the move. |
Kaito Ono 3B / RHP / Duluth, GA / 20206-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting third baseman, lean, raw athlete, ran a 7.20 laser-timed 60. Defensively, long arm action, quick arm speed to a ¾ slot, kept throws around the bag, 83 across the infield. Good athlete on the infield, has a tendency to field the ball deep but makes up for it with his arm strength, clean footwork. Offensively, balanced setup, leg kick timing trigger, big hand drop on load, balanced at contact. Line drive type hitter, some quickness in hands, barrel path is uphill through the zone, 81 exit velocity off a tee. Went 1-for-2 with a single and stolen base in gameplay. |
Ryan Mimbs 3B / OF / East Laurens, GA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 214 / POS: 25
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed hitting corner infielder, strong frame with the potential to add more. Ran a 7.28 laser-timed 60. Offensively, crouching, open setup, keeps hands high, short leg lift stride to a balanced position at contact. Barrel works with some incline, quick hand speed creates whip, ball comes off bat hot, takes a middle/pull approach, with a more elevated approach can be a real long ball threat, 91 mph exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, short arm action, uses a lower ¾ slot, kept throws around the target, 81 across the infield. Deliberate actions getting to the ball, prefers to get large frame in front of the ball. |
Michael Zarrillo SS / 3B / Holy Innocents Episcopal, GA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 200 / POS: 25
5-foot-11, 175-pound switch-hitting shortstop and third baseman, athletically built with a strong lower half, muscular with room for more. Defensively, has a short, loose arm action, quick arm speed, quick release, works from multiple slots, anywhere from low ¾ to high ¾, accurate on throws from all over the diamond, throws were true and carried, 81 across the infield. Plays through the ball up the middle in an athletic fashion, glove hand plays softly, is quick and fluid with footwork, quick on exchanges, gets to release fast. 5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed hitting two-way prospect, broad shoulders, strength throughout frame. On the mound, arm plays long and clean with good speed to a high ¾ slot, projects to add more velo given how arm works. Drop and drive delivery, works on-line, lands toe-closed, finishes square to home. Fastball sat 81-83 with late run to it. Curveball, 11/5 shape, depth, 64-68. Changeup, fade action, 77. Struck out three of the five batters he faced, did not allow a ball in play. Offensively, open setup, loads hands back fluidly, short leg kick timing trigger, stays balanced through contact. Takes a power approach at the plate, looks to do damage with each and every swing, used the entire field, going with the pitch, 84 exit velocity off a tee. Offensively, crouching, open setup, long hand load back coupled with a long stride. Swing path is long and uphill, allows him to elevate the ball, works center field and pull-side, generates hard contact, 85 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, arm action is long to an over-the-top slot, accurate with some carry on throws, 79 across the diamond. Plays through the ball, quick on transfers. |

5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop and third base, athletic build with strength throughout frame, projectable. Ran a 7.35 laser-timed 60. Offensively, balanced setup, short leg lift stride, hands load back smoothly, does a good job of incorporating lower half, stays balanced throughout. Takes a line drive approach, barrel whips through the zone on a level plane, gains extension through the zone, 87 exit velocity off a tee. Went 1-for-2 with a single in game play. Defensively, long arm action, stab on the back-side, arm works from multiple slots, kept throws around the target with some carry, 79 across the infield. Logan Hare 3B / RHP / Habersham Central, GA / 20215-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed two-way prospect, thick frame with strength throughout, has made gains in overall physique. Offensively, balanced setup with a bend in his knees, high hands load back to a near arm bar, short stride, remains balanced. Takes a power approach at the plate using mainly his upper body in his swing, barrel path is short to the ball and generates loft, 86 exit velocity off a tee. Went 2-for-2 in-game with a home run in his first at-bat and a single in his second, also collected a stolen base. Defensively, profiles as a third baseman, arm is long and loose to an over-the-top spot, has good feel and was routinely accurate on throws across the diamond, topping out at 79. Plays through the ball with fluid footwork, gets his feet working directionally towards the target, clean on exchanges. On the mound, arm action is clean to an over-the-top slot, quick acceleration through release. Drop and drive delivery, smooth rhythm, shoulders work uphill at-times, stays on-line, lands square, finishes crossing over. Fastball flashed cut action, 80-82, touched 83. Curveball, 12/6 shape, tight break, 68-70. Struck out two of the four batters he faced. |

Matthew Schlein 1B / RHP / Westside , GA / 20206-foot-1, 200 pound first baseman and right-handed pitcher. Large presence in box. Calm, upright stance. Simple approach with effortless swing.Hand load is straight back and efficient to the ball. Minimal strike with up-and-down front foot timing. Looks to backspin balls up in the zone. Easy swing to right-center when on time. Defensively, fields ball out front with reliable glove-presence, early. Sure defender on the corner. Showed a three-pitch-mix on the mound. Stays balanced throughout delivery and finish; stays on line to the plate. Short arm motion from a H3/4 slot. Fastball sat 70-72 mph with solid control. Curveball is still developing with shades of tight spin at times; 12/6 action, sitting 62-65 mph. Schelin hows same arm speed on changeup and comes out well from the short action; 64-66 mph. Mixes up looks out of the stretch with simple rocker and slide-step. |
Landon Youngblood 2B / SS / Bethlehem Christian, GA / 20205-foot-10, 170 pound frame with a thick, strong lower-half. Hits from upright stance with active hands. Sees ball deep in the zone with short, quick hands to the ball. Middle-of-the-field and opposite-field approach. 84 mph exit velocity off tee. Hands work free and sprays hard line drives; high finish. Defensively, gets around ball and works through it. Uses strong base with reliable hands. 7.47 runner; plays faster in-game. Active on base paths with multiple dirt-ball reads. High energy player with solid in-game IQ. |
Brendan Kraus 2B / SS / Campbell, GA / 20215-foot-10, 170 pound MIF with a frame that will surely add quicker-twitch and strength. Offensively, hits from wide base. Simple load with consistent front-foot movement and landing. Flat bat path that produces line drives. Battles well in-game and shows good awareness for strike zone. Defensively, Kraus has active feet on approach; breaks down early as ball is arriving. Fields with a solid, wide base. Two-handed fielder with solid fundamental approach. Accurate arm across the infield; 68 mph across. |
Jerrod Miller 2B / 3B / Savannah Christian, GA / 20215-foot-9, 165 pound left-handed hitting middle infielder. Hits from an athletic base with fluid lower-half. Gets on front-side upon contact. Hands work well through the zone; good barrel awareness. Gets to consistent hitting position. Miller has ability to hit to all fields as shown in solid BP rounds. 81mph exit velocity off tee.
