Preseason Classic: Chipola vs. State College of Florida Recap

BRADENTON, FL - The final day of the 2019 Preseason Classic provided the two most anticipated matchups of the entire event. Before IMG Academy took on TNXL Academy, two of the top junior colleges in the entire country battled it out. Chipola scored early and often in route to an 18-11 victory over State College of Florida.

The Indians of Chipola jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after the top half of the first. OF Jordan Anderson led the game off with a single and then came around to score when OF Cory Rosier blasted a high fastball to the right field wall for a run scoring triple. Then, with one out in the inning, INF Ivan Johnson (South Carolina recruit) blasted a ball 407 feet to dead center for two-run home run. Four straight singles and the game was 5-0 all of a sudden. The hits kept coming too, Rosier, in his second at-bat of the inning, knocked in two more runs with a single.

State College of Florida was able to muster an immediate response. C Giovanny Lorenzo knocked in leadoff man SS Shane Shifflett, who had reached via walk. Following Lorenzo’s lead, 1B Bryce Hulett added another single and anther run batted in. However, that was all Manatees could manage in the first, cutting the deficit to 7-2.

Shifflett helped cut into the lead further when he launched a three-run homer over the left field fence, making 8-5. Josh Crouch (UCF recruit) made in 8-6 in the third inning on his sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Hulett who had led the inning of with a double.

That would be as close as State College would get for the rest of the game. Chipola would score ten runs over the course of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, extending their lead to 18-7. This run was highlighted by 3B Julio Carrion hitting two home runs, a two-run and a three-run blast.

The Manatees mounted a comeback in the eighth inning. Tyler Acosta started it off by driving in the first run. Hulett then smoked his second double of the day, scoring two runs. Max Dineen followed by squaring one up for an RBI single. That would be the extent of the rally though, as State College of Florida would fall 18-11 to Chipola.

Offensively, Johnson (4-for-6, HR, 3 RBI), Rosier (3-for-4, 3B, 4 RBI), and Carrion (3-for-6, 2 HR, 5 RBI) led the Indians. The Manatees were led offensively by Hulett (3-for-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI).
