2.16 Underclass Invitational East: Pitchers Analysis

On Monday, February 16, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the Underclass Invitational East showcase for players in the 2017 and 2018 class.  Over 60 players from around the state participated to show their skills in front of the PBR staff.

Over the past week we have released position-by-position analysis articles with scouting reports on each player and identifying the top prospects. We will be updating the Missouri class of 2017 and 2018 player rankings over the next few weeks.

Today we take a look at the pitchers that participated in the event. The talent level was high and included many of the top class of 2017 and 2018 pitching prospects from Missouri.

Top Pitching Prospects

Joseph Boyle, RHP, Fort Zumwalt West, 2017
Boyle is a 6-foot-5 200-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  Impressed with projection and velocity, long limbed, athletic frame, high three-quarters arm slot, throws with easy effort, loose arm action, arm works, smooth rhythm, stays in line down mound, releases with downhill tilt, shows feel for three pitches, fastball at 84-87 mph, highest velo of the event, fastball has life with run and sink, curveball at 70-73, 11-to-5 plane, sharp/late break, change-up at near fastball arm speed, 78-79 mph, arm side release. Boyle is a top prospect in the 2017 class with a high ceiling.

Dennis Yingling, LHP, Lindbuergh, 2017
Yingling is a 6-foot-1 195-pound left-handed pitcher, will be a top LHP in the state, mostly high three-quarters release, short arm action, drop and drive style pitcher, smooth rhythm, repeatable release point, throws strikes, hides ball well, throw down angle, 83-87 mph fastball, slight run, 1-to-7 shaped curveball, 70-72 mph,late action, change-up at 74-75 mph. Strong build with wide shoulders, throws with easy effort.

Craig Theiss, RHP, De Soto, 2017
Theiss is a 6-foot 205-pound right-handed hitter. Theiss is a very athletic on the mound and in the outfield. Works from a high-three-quarters arm slot with quick arm speed.  Throws with regular effort and has a drop and drive type delivery, shows command of three pitches, fastball 83-86, touching 86 several times, curveball works the bottom of zone, 67-70 mph, 11-to-5 shape, late action, change-up at 77-9 mph, occasional sink, near fastball arm speed.  Thiess is on an upward trend and emerging as a top player in the state. 

Max Hunter, LHP, Clayton, 2017
Hunter is a 5-foot-10 180-pound left-handed pitcher in the 2017 class, quick arm speed, releases at high three-quarters, throws with easy effort, smooth rhythm, stays inline, athletic landing, arm works, touched 85 mph with fastball, sits 82-83 mph with run, throws strikes, 1-to-7 shape curveball, 63-67 mph, change-up with occasional sink, 68-70 mph, athletic build with easy arm action able to repeat delivery. 

Andrew Schofield, RHP, Fort Zumwalt West, 2017
Schofield is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  High-three-quarters slot, loose arm action, easy effort, repeats release, smooth rhythm, throws slightly across body, tall and fall type delivery, 81-82 mph fastball, with late run, has command of curveball, 11-to-5 shape, late action, 65-67 mph, one of the best curveballs at the event, aggressive with change-up, arm side sink, 71-72 mph, wide-shouldered frame, projects well.

Matthew McGilvray, LHP, Washinton, 2017
McGilvray is a 5-foot-9 165-pound left-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Athletic build, high three-quarters arm slot, clean delivery, repeatable release, loose arm action, inline towards plate, smooth rhythm, works at 78-80 mph with fastball, max fastball at 82 mph, fastball showed cutting action, good feel for change-up at 68-69 mph, throws for strike, down in zone, curveball at 59-63 mph, 1-to-7 plane.

Douglas Payne, RHP, Cuba, 2017
Payne is a lean 5-foot-9 150-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  Payne has quick arm speed, loose arm action, throws with some effort, strike thrower with three pitches, comes from high three-quarters arm slot, smooth rhythm, fastball has some cut, 80-83 mph, curveball has 12-to-6 shape, late action, 65-67 mph, good feel, change-up at 65-67 mph, slight arm side sink. Payne’s arm action and build will allow for increases in movement and velocity to go along with his command.

Nick Logusch, RHP, De Smet, 2017
Logusch is an athletic 6-foot 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Logusch has a high three-quarters arm slot, throws with regular effort, stays in line down the mound, athletic finish, fastball at 81-83 mph, touched 84 mph, slight run, curveball at 68-70 mph, 11-to-5 shape, change up at 74-76 mph, fastball arm speed.

Abney is a 6-foot-1 162-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2018 class.  Projectable build with over-the-top arm slot, quick rhythm during delivery, has deception.  Fastball has cut at 75-80 mph, throws for strike, 11-to-5 shaped curveball, late action, 63-65 mph, change-up at 71-72 mph, near fastball arm speed.  Abney is a player to watch in the 2018 class, with projectable frame.

Weston Baker, RHP, SLUH, 2017
Baker is a 6-foot-3 210-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Strong/wide-shouldered frame, three-quarters arm slot, long arm swing, stays in line down mound, throws with some effort, athletic finish, touched 85 with fastball, sat mostly 80-83, curveball at 62-65 mph, 11-to-5 plane, change-up at 69-71 mph.

Hunter Becker, RHP, Chaminade, 2017
Becker is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  Becker comes from an over-the-top release point, throws with regular effort, tall and type delivery, fastball 81-82 mph, 2-seam has run, 12-to-6 shaped curveball, gradual break, 62-63 mph, change-up at 77-76 mph, near fastball arm speed.

Thatcher Burns, RHP, Marquette, 2017
Burns is a 6-foot-3 160-pound is a left-handed pitcher from Marquette HS in St. Louis. Projectable frame, over-the-top release, fluid rhythm, stays in line during delivery, throws with regular effort, throws with downhill tilt, 73-76 mph fastball, throws for strike, fastball shows run, Curveball at 65-66 mph, 12-to-6 action, gradual break, change-up at 70-71, near fastball arm speed.

William Cavanagh, RHP, Fort Zumwalt South, 2017
Cavanagh is a 5-foot-6 150-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Cavanagh works fastball at 72-74 mph, over-the-top arm slot, controlled rhythm during delivery, stays inline down the mound, athletic finish, curveball at 59-62 mph, 12-to-6 shape, change-up at 63-65 mph.

Matt Ference, RHP, Lafayette, 2017
Ference is a long-legged 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class from Lafayette HS in the St. Louis Area.  Ference comes from a high-three quarters arm slot, smooth rhythm during delivery, tall and fall, throws with regular effort, stays inline down the mound, athletic finish, fastball at 77-79 mph, straight, 11-to-5 shape curveball with early action, 59-63 mph, change-up at 70-71 mph.  Overall, athletic frame with clean arm action that projects well.

Daniel Flaiz, RHP, St. Charles West, 2017
Flaiz is a 6-foot-2 215-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Has high-three quarters arm slot, smooth rhythm, throws slightly across body, fastball at 80-82 mph, 11-to-5 shaped curveball at 66-68 mph, late action, change up at 72-73 mph, slight arm side release, wide-shoulders, clean arm action.

Michael Gomski, RHP, Wentzville-Holt, 2017
Gomski is a 6-foot-1 200-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.Fastball at 75-78 mph, slight run, curveball thrown on 11-to-5 shape, 56-59 mph, change-up at 64-66 mph, lean build, three-quarters arm slot, controlled rhythm, lands slightly closed, shoulders level during delivery.

Tyler Groves, RHP, Forsyth, 2017
Groves is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Projectable  lean/athletic build, over-the-top release, sooth rhythm, repeatable release, lands athletic, quick arm speed, 75-79 mph fastball, straight, 12-to-6 shape curveball, down in zone, 63-64 mph, changeup at 66-71 mph, slight sink.

Alexander Hoff, RHP, St. Dominic, 2017
Hoff is a 6-foot 155-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  Hoff has an athletic frame, capable of adding muscle.  He has a high three-quarters slot, quick arm speed, and throws with regular effort.  He says inline with drop and drive type delivery. Fastball at 78-80 mph, slight run.  Curveball at 64-65 mph, 11-to-5 shape, change-up, near fastball arm speed, 69-71. 

Michael Hojnacki, RHP, Marquette, 2017
Hojnacki is a 6-foot 160-pound is a right-handed pitcher, worked at 79-82 mph with fastball, slight run, curveball at 69-72 mph, 12-to-6 shape curveball, change-up at near fastball arm speed, slight arm side sink, 74-76 mph, showed a cutter with late action, 76-77 mph, loose arm action, throws with regular effort, tall and fall type delivery, projectable and athletic frame.

Tommy Kraus, LHP, Vianney, 2017
Kraus is a 5-foot-7 147-pound is a left-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Kraus has over-the-top release, short arm action, and throws with regular effort.  Fastball at 74-75 mph, touching 77 mph, straight.  Curveball at 58-60 mph, slight 11-to-5 shape, change-up at 66-67 mph. 

Stone Krogman, RHP, Liberty, 2017
Krogman is a 6-foot-3 185-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  Athletic build with high three-quarters release and quick arm speed.  Throws with some effort, stays level in shoulders, throws slightly across body, athletic finish, fastball at 78-81 mph, 11-to-5 shape curveball, 67-69 mph, straight change-up at 73-74 mph.

Christian Loida, RHP, Valle Catholic, 2018
Loida is a 6-foot 170-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2018 class.  Wide-shouldered frame with strong legs and quick arm speed. Loida throws from a conventional over-the-top release and with some effort.  Long arm circle, stays inline down the mound, touched 80 mph with fastball, works at 74-78 mph, slight run, 12-to-6 shape curveball, 62-63 mph, 62-65 mph change-up slight arm side release,

Chris Lopez, Jr., LHP, Parkway West, 2018
Lopez is a 5-foot-9 145-pound left-handed pitcher in the 2018 class. Lopez is a strike thrower with over-the-top release, short arm action, stays in-line down the mound, throws with regular effort, athletic finish, fastball has slight run, 69-71 mph, curveball 12-to-6 action, 50-53 mph, change up at 61-64 mph.

Carter Martens, RHP, De Smet, 2017
Martens is a 6-foot-2 195-pound right-handed pitcher from De Smet in St. Louis. Over-the-top release, drop and drive type delivery, throws with regular effort and some rhythm, fastball at 77-81 mph, throws for strike, 10-to-4 plane curveball, early break, 61-63 mph, throws straight change-up at 72-75 mph, near fastball arm speed, repeats release point.

Benjamin Maurer, RHP, Waterloo (IL), 2017
Maurer is a 6-foot-2 205-pound right-handed pitcher from Waterloo (IL). Strong/wide-shoulders build, high three-quarters release, throws with some effort, long arm swing, stays in line towards plate, athletic finish, 77-80 mph fastball, 11-to-5 shape breaking ball, gradual action, 75-76 mph change-up.

Garrett Miller, RHP, Troy Buchanon, 2017
Miller is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  High three-quarters release, throws with regular effort slightly across body, 74-76 mph fastball, straight, 11-to-5 shaped curveball, 66-69 mph, 68-70 mph change up, near fastball arm speed. 

Mason Mitchell, LHP, Marquette, 2017
Mitchell is a 6-foot 192-pound left-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Throws fastball at 73-75 mph from over-the-top arm slot.  Delivery has some effort with smooth rhythm, has quick arm speed, stays in-line towards plate, 12-to-6 curveball, 60-62 mph, aggressive change-up with arm side sink, near fastball arm speed, 69-71 mph.  Athletic build with good arm action.

Seth Nast, RHP, Wesclin (IL), 2018
Nast is a 5-foot-8 175-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2018 class.  Nast is strong and athletic with a quick arm on the mound.  Throws with some effort, working fastball at 79-81 mph, with some run, works the knees.  Curveball has 11-to-5 shape, 66-70 mph, change-up 71-73 mph, near fastball arm speed.  He stays inline as he gets down mound, and accelerates during his delivery.

Scot Roberts, RHP, Hannibal, 2017
Roberts is a 6-foot-4 212-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  Works from a high three-quarters arm slot, throws with regular effort, drop and drive type delivery, has good tempo and some rhythm, loose arm, action, projectable lean frame, fastball at 80-82 mph, straight, 12-to-6 curveball, 67-69 mph, change-up at 78-80 mph.

Zachary Rosecrans, LHP, Columbia (IL), 2017
Rosecrans is a 5-foot-9 180-pound left-handed pitcher from Columbia, IL. Rosecrans throws with regular effort, smooth rhythm and high three-quarters release. Fastball at 73-74 mph, slight run, throws for strike. Curveball at 63-65 mph, 1-to-7 shape, gradual break, change up at 66-68 mph, slight arm side release. 

Brett Schroeder, RHP, Francis Howell Central, 2017
Schroeder is a 6-foot-1 185-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class.  Schroeder has an over-the-top release, quick arm speed, and a drop and drive type delivery. Athletic frame with fastball in 77-80 mph range, 11-to-5 shape curveball, 64-69 mph, split-finger at 66-68 mph. Stays in line down the mound, smooth rhythm.

Carter Truong, RHP, Central Community (IL), 2017
Troung is a 6-foot 155-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Truong throws with regular effort and an over-the-top arm slot.  Fastball at 71-74 mph, straight, curveball has 12-to-6 shape, 60-64 mph, change-up at 67-68 mph. Truong has a lean build with a repeatable delivery and smooth rhythm.

Andrew Wait, RHP, Marquette, 2017
Wait is a 5-foot-9 130-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2017 class. Wait has a side-arm release, shows good athleticism on the mound, quick arm speed, loose action, throws with regular effort, fastball at 78-79 mph, throw for strike, 10-to-4 shape “slurve”, shape action, throws for strike, change-up at 71 mph.  Wait throws with quick side-arm release with athleticism and deception.

Tommy Williams, RHP, Lafayette, 2018
Williams is a 6-foot-1 230-pound right-handed pitcher in the 2018 class.  Williams will be a player to follow on the mound an in the field.  Conventional over-the-top release, short arm action, and throws with regular effort.  Throws strikes with smooth rhythm and stays inline getting down the mound. Fastball at 74-78 mph, straight, 12-to-6 shaped curveball at 63-64 mph, change up at 68-70 mph, near fastball arm speed, strong build with quick twitch actions.
