LIBERTYVILLE, IL – North Suburban Conference Rivals Libertyville and Mundelein met on Saturday morning for the 4A Regional Championship with Mundelein taking the title 3-1.

Brendan Murphy got the start for Mundelein and was perfect thru 5.2 innings before finally surrendering a single to Brant Kym. Murphy, an Arizona State commit, was in command thru the first six innings. In the first he was working 90-92 mph with his fastball and kept hitters off balance with his changeup and slider throughout the rest of the outing.

Mundelein scored in the bottom of the second when Reid Rubio was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a bases loaded walk by Jeff Morton. They added another run in the third when Brett Parola scored on a passed ball, after he walked with one out. The Mustangs final run scored on an RBI single by Ryan Fairweather.

Libertyville got a rally going in the bottom of the sixth after Kym broke up the perfect game, leadoff hitter Brian Murphy singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. Ryan Greenberg worked a walk to load the bases for three hole hitter Daniel Marks who grounded into a fielders choice to end the threat.

Murphy struck out Ben Kimpler on an 89 mph fastball to start the seventh, in what was shaping up to be a complete game effort. Jackson Petersen then hit an infield single and following two walks to load the bases, Murphy’s day was done. Will Michalski came in relief and hit designated hitter Trent Jean to bring in the first run of the game. After that he settled in and struck out the next two hitter to close out the victory.

Mundelein advances to take on the winner of the Palatine Regional on Thursday at Stevenson.
