Aurora Preseason I.D.: Blast Motion Board

By Andy Sroka
Illinois and Wisconsin Assistant Director

On Feb. 27, the PBR Illinois team hosted the second annual Aurora Preseason I.D. at the Aurora Sports Dome in Aurora, Ill. The event featured nearly 100 players from high school graduates in classes 2022-25, from across the Chicagoland area.

Last week, our staff collaborated to highlight the biggest takeaways and highlights from this showcase, and published them within our Quick Hits piece. We also shared the event's traditional leaderboards, published inside this Statistical Analysis. Today, with the help of Blast Motion sensors, we're diving a little deeper into the data to see what we can find.

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

4 Tyler Vasey IL Prairie Ridge 2023 21.8 g
5 Jake Kohanzo IL Barrington 2022 RHP 21.8 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.

ON-PLANE EFFICIENCY PERCENTAGE

Rank Name State School Class Pos On Plane Eff (avg)
1 Ryan Quinlan IL Huntley 2023 2B 92 %
2 Daniel Krulak IL Bartlett 2023 LHP 90 %
3 Colin Lynch IL South Elgin 2022 OF 85 %

8 Johnny Carter IL Belvidere 2023 C 80 %
9 Derek Huber IL Huntley 2023 RHP 80 %
10 Victor Rodriguez Jr. IL Hampshire 2023 SS 80 %

On-Plane Efficiency: This metric measures the percentage of your swing that the sweet spot of the bat is considered to be On Plane. The reference plane is defined at the moment of impact. The percentage of your swing On Plane is determined by the amount of speed generated within that reference plane.
