Illinois Scouting Notes
By: Matt Yarber

A pitcher's duel between Chris Whelan and River Pitlock ended in a 4-2 win for the York Dukes.  Scouting notes about the game are below.

Benet Red Wings

Ryan Raupach, OF, Class of 2014 – is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound outfielder who showed impressive speed, starting the game off with a bunt down third base and was clocked at 3.95 down the line.  He ended the day going 2 for 3 with a walk.

Chris Whelan, MIF/RHP, Class of 2014 – the Bradley University commit looks more physical coming in to his junior year, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 180 pounds.  Whelan impressed on the mound, starting the season for the Red Wings.  Whelan went 4 2/3 innings only giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and one walk.  Whelan was sitting 82-84 mph and kept his fastball down in the zone, hitting both sides of the plate.  He had a feel for both his off-speed pitches, mixing in a 71-74 mph change up with good arm side run and a 73-75 mph curveball that shows a solid 10/4 bite.

Pat McInerney, 1B/RHP, Class of 2013 – the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Illinois commit showed off his raw power at the plate going 1-4 with a opposite field HR.

Cole Channell, MIF, Class of 2015 – the 6-foot, 165-pound middle infielder possesses smooth hands and good lateral movement at shortstop.  Channell went 0-0 on the day with a BB and HBP.  He is one to keep an eye on in the coming years as he will continue to fill out physically.

Joe Boyle, 3B, Class of 2014 – Boyle is a 6-foot-1 third baseman who flashed a strong arm across the infield.  Boyle made some tough plays defensively and as the season progresses he will continue to develop into a solid defensive player.  At the plate, Boyle has a relaxed, balanced setup and showed an opposite field approach in his second at bat driving a ball to right center for a double.

York Dukes

Anthony Santos, 1B/RHP, Class of 2014 – Santos is a physical 6-foot-1, 195 pound first basemen who will be a staple in York’s lineup this year.  Santos went 1-3 on the day and scored a run.

River Pitlock, RHP/SS, Class of 2013 – the Butler University commit started the season on the bump for the Dukes showing a 82-85 mph fastball that was effective when down in the zone.  He showed good feel for his 70 mph changeup and flashed some 70-71 mph curveball with tight spin. Pitlock went 4 innings giving up 4 hits and 3 walks while only giving up 1 earned run.

Louis Alcaraz, SS/RHP, Class of 2013 – the 5-foot-10, 190 pound two-way player went three innings for York.  Alcaraz throws from a ¾ arm slot and was clocked at 78-80 mph.  He showed a 65-68 mph curveball and mixed in a couple 70 mph changeups that showed arm side run and kept the hitters off balance.
