Illinois Recruiting Notebook

Lots of recruiting news from around Illinois recently, including a highly ranked 2015 prospect. A look at who’s going where:

+ Brett Newberg, a 2015 LHP/1B from Moline HS, has committed to Austin Peay. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Newberg is currently ranked No. 19 in Illinois’ 2015 class and No. 87 overall. Although Newberg is more known for his pitching prowess, he possesses big power potential from the right side. Newberg was a member of Team Illinois at the Midwest Future Games last August.

+ One of the top unsigned seniors is now off the board after OF Cody Carroll committed to Bradley recently. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Glenbrook South HS earned top prospect honors at the PBR Unsigned Senior Showcase in January. At the event, Carroll ran a 6.70 60, was clocked at 90 mph from the outfield, and registered 89 mph exit velocity. Carroll is currently ranked No. 70 in Illinois’ 2014 class.

+ Tanner Smith, a 6-foot-6 senior RHP from Washington Community HS, has committed to Illinois Central College. As a junior, Smith posted a 3-1 record with a 2.58 ERA.

+ Three Brother Rice seniors have named their schools recently. LHP Ian McGinnis has committed to Illinois Wesleyan; Kyle Hilliard has committed to Concordia in Wisconsin; and Jake Barry has committed to St. Mary’s.

+ Two Crystal Lake South prospects have named their schools: OF Paul Wille has committed to McHenry County College, and C Casey Oliver has committed to North Park University.

+ Josh Hubbs, a C/3B from Mahomet-Seymour HS, has committed to North Central College.
