Illinois Recruiting Roundup: In Depth Scouting Notes on Recent Illinois Commitments

Illinois College Commitments
6-foot-1, 190-pound muscular and athletic right-handed hitting shortstop currently ranked No. 83 in Illinois’ 2016 class. Impressed as the No. 10 overall prospect at October's Class of 2016 Showcase. Hits from a balanced slightly open setup, quiet hands load smoothly, short stride, simple approach, short path feel for barrel, line drives from gap-to-gap, one of the top rounds of batting practice at the event, 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively, threw 80 mph across the diamond from short, high ¾ slot with accuracy. Profiles at third base, but hands work fielding the baseball, fluid footwork. Ran a 7.17 60.
Hank Schau, OF/RHP, Maine South, 2015 - Madison College
Schau's Report from 2013's Class of 2015 Showcase: 6-foot-2, 165-pound wiry two way player. Defensively he moves with athletic feet in a projectable frame. Ran a 7.33 60. Throws 82 mph with some carry and accuracy. At the plate he hits with balance and a short stride. Swing is repeated easily and makes hard contact consistently. Exit velocity was 82 mph off a tee. On the mound he has a tall and fall delivery. Throws with a long, loose arm from a high ¾ slot. Fastball was thrown for strikes with sink, sitting 80-81 mph. His curveball has 12/6 shape with gradual break at 70-73 mph. Changeup was 68-72 mph flashing some fade.
Brett Stratinsky, 1B, Stagg, 2015 - McHenry County
Currently ranked No. 206 in Illinois' 2015 class was ranked as the No. 2 corner infielder at October's Unsigned Senior Showcase. His scouting report from the event: 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-handed hitting first baseman, extra-large frame, strong build. Offensively hits from a tall setup, open stance, short stride back to even, good balance through contact. Pull side power approach, looks to lift the baseball, bat speed present, loose hands with slight uphill path. Power hitter approach from the left side, 91 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively is a big target at first base, hands work, showed some natural actions around the bag. Arm works from a high ¾ slot, accurate arm, 68 mph across the diamond. 7.35 runner in the 60.
Stout's Scouting Report from October's Unsigned Senior Showcase: 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-handed pitcher works from a long, high ¾ arm slot, regular effort, works slightly across his body, recoils at release. Fastball sat 82-84 mph. Curveball showed 11/5 shape at 66-67 mph, slider had more lateral break in the 68-70 mph range. Sinking changeup was thrown from 70-71 mph.
Marco Melgoza, 3B, Plainfield South, 2015 - Southeastern CC (IA)
Currently ranked No. 262 in Illinois' 2015 class. Melgoza's scouting report from this August's Chicagoland Open: 6-foot, 203-pound right-handed hitting third baseman currently ranked No. 240 in Illinois’ 2015 class. Hits from an open setup, coiling front foot to load lower half. Foot gets down early, hit several line drives from gap-to-gap during batting practice. Moves hands back smoothly creating some loft in his swing with 86 mph exit velocity. Exit velo has been up to 92 mph at past events. Impressed at third base with arm across the diamond at 80 mph. Fields through the baseball with soft hands getting rid of it quick from short arm action with good carry.
