MLB Draft: Day 2 Recap



As expected, it was an overall uneventful Day 2 of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Tuesday. Through 15 rounds, only 11 players were taken from Illinois, four of which were high school prospects.

Chad Johnson, a left-handed hitting catcher from Galesburg HS, was the first Illinois player taken.  The Kansas City Royals drafted him in the 5th round with the 163rd pick. Johnson, who is a top-level defensive catcher with a smooth left-handed swing, is signed at Illinois State.

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Kevin Ross, a shortstop from Niles West HS, in the 8th round with 256th pick.

The Chicago White Sox drafted Zach Stoner, a first baseman from Rockford Boylan Catholic HS in the 12th round with the 381st pick.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected right-handed pitcher Ryan Borucki from Mundelein HS in the 15th round with the 475th pick. Borucki, who’s currently the No. 1 ranked player in the class, missed most of the season with an elbow injury.

In the college ranks, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Southern Illinois University’s power left-handed hitter Christopher Serritella in the 4th round with the 158th pick.  He attended Loyola Academy HS.

The Atlanta Braves drafted University of Missouri’s outfielder Blake Brown in the 5th round with the 179th pick. Brown was a PBR All State selection in 2010, while attending Normal West High School.

The Oakland Athletics selected Indiana State’s right-handed pitcher Dakota Bacus in the 9th round with the 289th pick.  Bacus attended Moline High School.

The Miami Marlins selected University of Illinois’ right-handed pitcher Matt Milroy in the 11th round with the 347th pick.  He attended Marmion Academy.

In the 13th round the Chicago White Sox John A. Logan College’s Derek Thompson was selected with the 411th pick.  While attending Teutopolis High School ,Thompson was the No. 1-ranked player in 2011.  He led his team to two straight Class 2A championships.  This was his second time being drafted.

The Chicago White Sox drafted Michigan State’s right-handed pitcher Tony Buccifero in the 14th round with the 441st pick of the draft.  Buccifereo attended Minooka HS

The Cincinnati Reds selected Trinity University’s right-handed pitcher Ben Klimesh in the 15th round with the 472nd pick.  Klimesh attended New Trier High School.
