Illinois MLB Draft Recap

By Sean Duncan
Executive Director

As expected, it was a down year for Illinois high school players in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, though Illinois on a whole saw 43 players selected over the course of the three days.

The highlight of Illinois’ draft came from 2010 PBR first-team All-State selection Eric Jagielo, who was drafted in the first round by the Yankees, No. 26 overall. Jagielo, a power-hitting corner infielder from Downers Grove North HS, went on to have a decorated career at Notre Dame.

It took 24 rounds before the first Illinois prep prospect was selected, when Moline RHP Matt Brill was taken by the Mets with the 716 pick. Ottawa OF Michael Hermosillo was the next high school player taken, in the 28th round (847 overall), by the Angels.

Other draft highlights include:

+ Simeon HS had three players drafted: OF Corey Ray (33rd round, 987 overall, Mariners), SS Marshawn Taylor (35th round, 1047 overall, Mariners) and 2B Ronell Coleman (40th round, 1203 overall, White Sox).

+ Former Homewood-Flossmoor ace left-hander Daniel Lietz was selected in the fifth round by the Blue Jays. Lietz was a standout at Heartland CC for the last two years.

+ Former Lincoln Community standout Ryan Aper was taken in the sixth round by the Marlins. Aper emerged at Lincoln Land College and is committed to Middle Tennessee State.

+ Both the Parr twins were drafted out of the University of Illinois. Left-handed hitting OF Justin Parr was drafted in the eighth round by the Phillies; 3B Jordan Parr was selected in the 15th round by the Diamondbacks. Older brother Josh Parr was previously drafted out of Illinois. All three Parr brothers played at Illinois Valley Central HS, along with RHP Chris Razo, who was drafted in the 24th round out of Illinois State.

+ Speaking of the University of Illinois, four Illini were popped in the draft: SS Thomas Lindauer (23rd Round; Moline HS) and RHP Kevin Johnson (24th Round; Mount Carmel HS), and the Parr twins.

+ Two St. Rita outfielders were drafted – one former, one current. Mark Payton, now at the University of Texas, was taken in the 16th round by the Indians; and Anthony Ray was selected in the 36th round by the Cardinals.

+ Two former Fremd HS standouts were drafted: OF Mike Tauchman (10th round; Bradley) and LHP Clint Terry (18th round, Lee University).

+ 2010 PBR Player of the Year Shane Conlon, who’s helped lead Kansas State to the Super Regionals, was drafted in the 21st round. In high school, Conlon led Naperville Central to the state championship as a senior.
