Joliet West (1-0; 1-0) won “The Battle of Joliet,” defeating the Steelmen 8-2, at Silver Cross Field in Joliet on Friday. The Tigers received solid pitching performances from their junior RHPs Quinn Ahern (1-0) and Jake Herron. Ahern picked up the win, allowing one earned run and two hits in a solid four-inning start. Herron fired three scoreless innings in relief of Ahern to pick up the save. The Tigers were led by junior Jeff Gersch, who plated a pair of Tiger runs in West’s big Southwest Conference Blue Division win.

No. 29 Plainfield North (1-0) blasted Morris 11-0 in five innings in the Tigers’ season-opener. Tiger senior Joe Purcel had a pair of hits and plated three Tiger runs. Junior Matt Fenza chipped in with a pair of RBI.

Pontiac (1-0) won its season-opener behind Parkland College-recruit LHP Caleb Leach (1-0). Leach struck out 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced and finished up with four hitless innings as the Indians beat Dwight 6-0.

Whitney Young (2-0) won a Jackie Robinson crossover affair with Von Steuben on Friday. The Dolphins won 8-2 and were led by juniors Torrence Summerlin and C Justin Missner. Summerlin had a pair of hits and two RBI and  Missner tripled home a run for the victorious Dolphins.  

Bloomington Central Catholic (3-0) defeated Hartsburg-Emden 5-3 on Friday. Trailing 3-2, as the contest entered the bottom of the sixth, the Saints exploded for three runs, led by junior Sean Coonan. Coonan had the big hit in the sixth and finished with a pair of hits and three big RBI.

Chicago Christian (4-0) routed Lisle 9-1 as senior RHP Trent Overzet improved to 2-0 on the campaign and 20-1 in his Knight career. Senior SS Mike Camp went deep for the Knights in Lisle.

Crystal Lake South (2-0) crushed Marengo 19-0 in five innings, as three Gator pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Senior Jordan Van Dyck, junior Tyler Hall and senior Jack Byron did not allow the Indians to hit safely and combined for 12 strikeouts. The Gators offense was led by senior C, Dom Winiecki and junior 3B Tommy Gaede who each plated three Gator runs.

Mahomet-Seymour (4-0) defeated Monticello 9-5 on Friday. Freshman RHPJack Rettig (1-0) slammed the door on Monticello, firing four scoreless innings and fanning five to pick up the win. Junior Tyler Francisco had a pair of hits and two RBI to lead the Bulldog attack.

Danville (1-0) won its season-opener blanking Bismarck-Henning 7-0. Viking 6-foot-1, 220 pound junior C, Chuckie Robinson had two hits and two RBI to lead the Vikings. Viking RHP Cash Kiser (1-0) picked up the win on the mound with a scoreless opening-day performance.

Reavis (2-0) rolled past Morton West 8-3 in Burbank on Friday. Junior C Richie Velez drove home three runs to lead the Ram attack. Junior 1B David Beltran chipped in with a pair of RBI and junior Anthony Doory (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Rams.

Wheaton Academy (1-1) evened up its record behind Wright State-bound RHP Trevor Swaney, as the Warriors routed Plano 15-5. Swaney (1-0) fired three scoreless innings on the mound and doubled and went deep with his bat.

Niles West (1-0) blanked Wheeling 9-0 in its season-opener on Friday. The Wolves were led by University of Michigan-bound 3B Kevin Ross. Ross was perfect at the plate with three doubles and two RBI.

Bremen (2-0) scored three touchdowns but missed an extra-point in its 20-0 rout of Bogan on Friday. Just kidding! Brave sophomore 2B Tyler Banovich did go deep with a teammate aboard and Brave Noel Sanders contributed three RBI as the Braves put 20 on the board for the second straight game in Midlothian.
