JOLIET – Metamora capped an impressive season in which it battled through adversity to finish third in Class 3A after defeating Grayslake Central 10-1 in the third-place game Saturday morning.

After losing its star two-way player, Trent Johnson on March 31, and limping into the playoffs, the Redbirds caught fire to capture the school’s first state trophy.

Sophomore left-hander Geremy Guerrero (8-1) tossed another stellar game, this time a two-hit masterpiece in which he recorded five strikeouts, one walk and one earned run. Kansas State-bound junior shortstop Ethan Skender led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Guerrero also helped himself with a two-run single, and junior second baseman Brady Fairfield doubled, walked, scored two runs and drove in one.

For Grayslake Central, the trip to Joliet marked the third state trophy for the Rams (29-12) in coach Troy Whalen’s 12 years at the school. Last year, Grayslake Central finished took home the third-place trophy, as well as 2009.

Believe it or not, Grayslake Central actually led 1-0 heading into the fifth inning before Metamora (27-13) finally broke through for three runs against Grayslake Central senior starter Russell Lundius (7-2). Then the floodgates opened in the sixth inning. Metamora erupted for seven runs behind five hits and three errors. Before the Rams knew it, Metamora ran off 10 unanswered runs.

The Rams struggled mightily defensively, committing seven errors in the game.
